Biography

Anthony Puente will serve as a graduate assistant in 2016. Puente will be assisting defensive coordinator Tom Mason.

Puente suited up for the Miners from 2011-14 and redshirted during the 2010 campaign. Under head coach Sean Kugler, the former walk-on earned a scholarship at the start of his junior season. The native of San Antonio, Texas played in 46 contests, while starting all 23 during his junior and senior seasons. Puente recorded 122 tackles (4.5 for loss) with two quarterback hurries and a breakup.

Puente emerged during his junior season, starting all 12 contests and tallying a career-best 60 tackles. During his senior season, Puente helped guide a stout UTEP defense as the Miners won seven games and earned a bid to the 2014 Gildan New Mexico Bowl. Puente opened his senior season with a career-high 11 tackles at New Mexico.

During Puente's senior season, the UTEP defense made dramatic improvements from the 2013 season. The Miners' defense yielded just over 28 points per game in 2014, improving from 39 points per contest the season before. The UTEP defense ranked first in Conference USA, and ninth nationally, in third down conversions allowed (59).

Puente was a three-year letterwinner while playing at John Marshall High School. He was recognized as first team All-City and All-District as both a junior and senior.
