Fowler Freund is in his first year on Scotty Walden’s staff. Freund returns to El Paso, where he attended high school and was on the UTEP football team from 2015 to 2018 as a long snapper.
Freund served as the tight ends coach (2020) and running backs coach (2021) as a volunteer assistant at Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss., before returning to the Lone Star State.
From the Spring of 2022 through Spring 2025, Freund worked in multiple capacities at Sul Ross State, gaining valuable experience. He served as the running backs coach, assistant wide receivers coach, and assistant quarterbacks coach (2022). Freund moved to special team coordinator and tight ends coach (2023), followed by slot receivers coach, specialists coach, and director of player personnel (2024) and slot receivers and recruiting director (Spring 2025). In Freund’s time at Sul Ros, he helped the team break 12 school records and coached an All-Conference Specialist in both DII and DIII.
