Jake Waters will begin his third season with the UTEP football program in 2020, mentoring the inside wide receivers. Waters played quarterback at Kansas State and was a two-year starter (2013-14) working with Dana Dimel, who was the Wildcats' offensive coordinator at the time.

At UTEP, Waters works specifically with the tight ends and fullbacks.  Used primarily as a blocking tight end in his first three seasons (2015-18) at Purdue, Jess Trussell excelled as a grad transfer with the Miners under Waters' tutelage in 2019.  He registered the first catches of his collegiate career and finished the campaign with 13 receptions for 177 yards.

Tight end David Lucero ranked second on the team in receiving yards (322) and hauled in two touchdown catches in 2018. Lucero registered the team's longest play from scrimmage when he rambled for an 88-yard touchdown at WKU.  Josh Weeks, who also made multiple starts at the tight end position, paced the squad in yards per catch (19.1 avg.).

In 2018 Waters also worked with fullback Winston Dimel, who currently plays for the Los Angeles Galaxy in the XFL.

Waters arrived in the Sun City from Iowa State, where he served as a graduate assistant with the offense. The Cyclones finished 7-5 during the regular season, while averaging 29.9 points and 389.3 yards of total offense per contest.

Prior to his stint in Ames, Iowa, Waters spent two seasons (2015-2016) as a volunteer quarterbacks coach at Iowa Western CC. Iowa Western quarterbacks threw for 52 touchdowns during the two seasons Waters was on the staff.

Waters, who was team captain in 2014 at K-State, went 17-9 as a starter, breaking career school records in completion percentage, passing efficiency and total offensive yards per game.

Prior to his two-year career at KSU, Waters was the 2012 NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year at Iowa Western. The first-team All-American broke the NJCAA single-season completion record formerly held by Cam Newton by completing 73.3 percent of his passes in 2012.

Waters had a brief professional career, signing a contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Seattle Seahawks of the NFL, and earning a roster spot with the Canadian Football League’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

A native of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Waters prepped at St. Albert High School, leading the Falcons to a pair of Class 1A state titles and a 37-2 record as a starter. He was a three-time Iowa Newspaper Association (INA) All-State selection.

Waters earned his degree from Kansas State in 2014.
