UTEP Football Head Coach Scotty Walden announced Nate Mullen as offensive quality control-wide receivers on April 2. He joins UTEP after gaining experience at multiple schools following his playing career.

Most recently, Mullen served as the running backs coach and co-special teams coordinator with UVA Wise. He mentored RB Jaevon Gillespie, who earned All-Mountain Division Honors through the South Athletic Conference. He oversaw the punt and kickoff return units, in addition to being the offensive play caller for the final game of the season.

Prior to that, he was a graduate assistant who was responsible for all special teams and offensive quality duties with Murray State in 2022. He got his start at Southern Miss, where he worked with Walden. Mullen was a graduate assistant for both the 2020 (offensive line) and 2021 (wide receiver) seasons.

Mullen played collegiately for Charlotte (2015-17), starting in 10 personnel and as the punt returner. He then spent two years with Western Carolina (2018-19), starting all 23 games on offense while rotating as a punt returner. He paced the team in catches in 2018 and was voted a team captain by his teammates in 2019.

Mullen received his B.S. in psychology with a minor in geology from Western Carolina in the Fall of 2019. He went on to earn a master’s degree in sports management from Southern Miss in the Spring of 2022.
