Metz's career completion percentage of .574 ranks third in school history, and his 26 TD passes rate ninth.  He compiled the second-best completion percentage in school history (.647) in 2016.

The native of El Paso and Andress High School graduate is best known for leading UTEP to a thrilling 50-47, overtime win at I-10 rival NM State during his freshman season of 2015.  Metz threw for 218 yards on 15-of-19 passing with three scores, including the game-winning touchdown toss, against the Aggies.  He also supplied an eight-yard rushing score that tied the contest with 42 seconds left.

Metz's best season statistically came in 2016, when he threw for 1,375 yards and 14 TDs.  In 2018, he passed for a career-high 313 yards versus North Texas.

He was one of 45 national collegiate quarterbacks, and the first UTEP quarterback, to be invited to the 2017 Manning Passing Academy supervised by the Manning Family (Archie, Cooper, Peyton and Eli).

Metz was a three-year varsity starter at Andress and a first team All-District 1-4A choice.
