Entering his second season at UTEP in 2020, Shane Smith serves as a graduate assistant working with the linebackers.
 
Smith played defensive tackle at the University of Kansas from 2009-13. The three-year letterman saw action in 37 contests. Smith excelled in the classroom, as he was named Academic All-Big 12 first team his last three years with the Jayhawks. He was the KU Defensive Scout Player of the Week in 2009, while earning KU Compete Team Defensive Player of the Week in 2010.
 
Smith’s first coaching stop was at Eastern New Mexico in 2017 where he was a graduate assistant, mentoring the defensive line. The Greyhounds posted an 8-2 mark that season. 
 
He went on to be the defensive line coach at Bemidji State in 2018. The Beavers went 7-4 while producing a trio of All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference defensive linemen. Sophomore Josh Wleh was named All-NSIC first team, junior Alex Hoffman was named second team and senior Dylan Ellingson earned honorable mention accolades.
 
Smith earned his degree from KU in 2014 with a bachelors in secondary education. He’s a native of Albuquerque, N.M., where he played at El Dorado High School.
