UTEP Football Head Coach Scotty Walden announced the hire of Chad Johnson the Miners’ director of Texas recruiting on Jan. 3, 2024.
 
Johnson joins Walden’s staff following an extensive high school coaching career in the state of Texas over the last two decades. Johnson will head up the recruiting efforts in The Lone Star State, identifying high school recruits and transfer portal student-athletes.

Johnson most recently worked at Willis High School (6A) in Willis, Texas, as the recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach from 2022-2023. Prior, he served as the assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach at Spring High School (6A) in Spring, Texas, from 2010-2022. Johnson was the defensive line coach and track discus coach at Kingwood Park High School (5A) in Kingwood, Texas during the 2009-10 season. He worked at Dekaney High School (6A) in Houston, Texas, in 2008-09, while Johnson’s first stop at Willis HS was during the 2007-08 season as the program’s academic coordinator, varsity defensive line coach and discus coach. Johnson was the boy’s athletic coordinator at Santa Fe Junior High School in Santa Fe, Texas, in 2006-07. Johnson started his coaching career at Alvin Junior High in Alvin, Texas, as the head boys basketball coach, head boys and girls swim coach, assistant defensive football coach and assistant track coach (2000-2006). 
 
Johnson assisted over 150 football players in securing college scholarship opportunities, while he developed 33 defensive linemen into college football players in the last 14 years. He was on the staff at Spring HS that was recognized as the 2014 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football U.S. Army 6A Team of the Year. His teams have won 76 percent of their games the last 10 years, while Spring HS won a school-record 11 games in 2015 and again in 2021. Willis HS won a school-record 12 games during the 2023 campaign. 
 
Johnson, a native of Raymond, Iowa, received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Upper Iowa University in 2000. He followed with a Master of Science in Sports Management from Nova Southeastern University in 2005.
