Jimmy Gonzales

Jimmy Gonzales joined the UTEP Football staff as Director of Recruiting/Player Personnel in July, 2021.

Gonzales is back in the collegiate ranks after running SKP San Antonio, a recruiting service and sports performance training facility, from 2013-21.  He was also the owner and Co-Director of TXFL Prep from 2019-21.

He held various roles with Lockhart Independent School District, National Collegiate Scouting Association (NCSA) and National Preps from 2009-16.

A native of Schertz, Texas, Gonzales has extensive background working in college football.  His last stint was as Director of Football Operations at Oklahoma State from 2005-08.


He came to OSU after two years as the Director of Player Development at Notre Dame.  He also served on the staffs at Texas and Oklahoma in administrative capacities.  Prior to that, he coached for almost 15 years at Duke, Northwestern, Wisconsin, Tulsa, Texas Lutheran and Southwest Texas State.

Gonzales worked directly with recruiting administration and player development at Notre Dame (2003-05), along with other duties.  Before his arrival in South Bend, he spent four seasons (1993-2003) at Army as the director of football operations and recruiting coordinator.  Gonzales handled the administrative operations for the Army football program, aided in recruiting weekends and team travel, and assisted with community service projects and events.

He was the Assistant Athletic Director for Football Operations at Texas from 1996-98.  The 1996 Longhorns won the Big 12 championship, defeating Nebraska for the title.

Gonzales was the defensive backfield and ends coach at Duke (1994-95) and coached defensive backs at Northwestern (1990-92).  He served in a similar capacity at Wisconsin (1986-89), where he was the defensive backs coach and co-director of summer camps.

Gonzales was the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Tulsa (1985-86), the defensive coordinator at Texas Lutheran (1985) and a graduate assistant at both TCU (1983-84) and Southwest Texas State (1982).

He has been involved with eight bowl games during his coaching career -- Bluebonnet Bowl (TCU 1984), Sun Bowl (Oklahoma 1993), Hall of Fame Bowl (Duke 1995), Fiesta Bowl (Texas 1997), Insight Bowl (Notre Dame 2004 and Oklahoma State 2007), Independence Bowl (Oklahoma State 2006) and Pacific Life Bowl (Oklahoma State 2008). 

He graduated from Texas Luthern College with a bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1981.  He added a Master's degree in Education from TCU in 1991.

Gonzales and his wife, Mary, have three daughters -- Danica, Lea and Mya Nicole.
