Tyler Elbrecht will return to his home state as he enters his first year as the UTEP men’s golf graduate assistant.
The Austin, Texas native graduated from the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he completed his bachelor’s degree in political science with a minor in Spanish, and was a member of the men’s golf team.
As a freshman for the Warhawks, Elbrecht participated in three events and set a season low first round of his collegiate golf career with a 77 at the HBU Men’s Intercollegiate. His 2012-13 season best finish was at the SFA Crown Classic, where he placed 34th.
Elbrecht competed in two tournaments his sophomore season, averaging 76.50 a round through six rounds. He improved his career best finish with a 22nd place showing at the First Tee Classic (76-77-76/229) and recorded a new career-best round low of 75 at the ULM/Wallace Jones Invitational.
Thanks to his father, Tim, a cousin, and an uncle, Elbrecht got his start in golf at nine years old, though he didn’t start playing in tournaments until he was 13.
“We just started playing a lot together,” Elbrecht said. “That’s how I got into it."
A highlight of Elbrecht’s career came at the 2013 Austin Men’s City Championship at the Morris Williams Golf Course, where he shot 9-under 63 in the final round, breaking two-time Masters champion Ben Crenshaw’s course record.
Elbrecht is a four-time winner of the Texas Junior Golf Tournament and lettered all four years at Anderson High School in Austin, Texas.
While at UTEP, Elbrecht is pursuing a master’s degree in public administration.
When he’s not playing golf, Tyler enjoys watching and playing sports. He is the son of Tim and Cindy Elbrecht and has one sister, Carly.
