UTEP offensive lineman Trey Darilek was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2004 NFL Draft on Sunday.
Darilek was the 35th pick of the fourth round, and the 131st selection overall.
A native of San Antonio, Texas, Darilek becomes the sixth UTEP player to be drafted in the last five years. He is the first Miner to be selected since Lee Mays went to Pittsburgh in the sixth round of the 2002 draft.
The 6-4, 301-pound Darilek is UTEP's highest draft choice since punter Ed Bunn was picked in the third round of the 1993 draft. He is the first Miner offensive lineman to be drafted since guard Darryl Moore landed with the Washington Redskins in the eighth round in 1992.
Darilek started 43 games for UTEP over the last four years, including all 13 in 2003. He was tabbed honorable mention All-WAC in 2002, and first team All-WAC in 2003.
He was a 30-game starter at right tackle from 2000-02 before ending his career at left tackle in 2003. Darilek was named to College Football News' Freshman All-America squad in 2000 after helping the Miners to an 8-4 record and a share of the WAC title. UTEP was 22nd in the nation in scoring offense and 36th in total offense that year. Darilek missed a portion of the 2002 season due to a torn MCL.
Darilek is projected to play guard in the NFL. His head coach in Philadelphia is Andy Reid, a former offensive line coach and assistant to Bob Stull at UTEP.
