Miners Take Second At C-USA Champs

UTEP’s Fatimoh Muhammed won two titles to help guide the Miners to a second-place finish at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Houston, Texas, Saturday.

UTEP was the runner up with 122 points behind host-school Rice, which closed with 146.50. The finish tied the Miners’ best ever finish.

Muhammed was a double winner taking the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs. She ran 2:08.15 just ahead of teammate Kelly Young (2:08.40) in the 800. Muhammed posted a time of 4:26.67 in the 1,500, with Young taking third in 4:32.32 and Jepchirchir Kigen seventh in 4:40.73.

The Miners other winner was Nelly Tchayem who was victorious in the triple jump with a jump of 42-10 1/4 (13.06).

UTEP had several other top finishers.

Sprinter Halimat Ismaila ran 53.44 to finish as the runner up in the 400-meter dash. She was also fifth in the 200-meter dash (24.07).

Junior Oludamola Osayomi was the silver medalist in the 100-meter dash (11.42) and took the bronze in the 200 (23.77).

Ismaila, Osayomi, Quashanda Welch and Siobhian Crain made up the 400-meter relay which finished third in 45.00.

Keisha Walkes had a regional throw of 159-6 (48.61) in the discus to take the bronze medal.

Freshman Chasity Ross also scored in the 400-meter hurdles (eighth, 1:07.52).

The men’s team was also second with 145 points. Memphis took the title, tallying 154.5 points.

The Miners took three gold, four silvers and two bronze medals on Saturday.

Senior Daniel Ward won the 200-meter dash, running 21.15. He also anchored the 400 relay that was second in 40.22 and was fifth in the 400 (47.38).

Stephen Samoei won the 5,000-meter run and was third in the 1,500. He ran 14:07.73 in the 5,000 and finished in 3:47.45 in the 1,500.

Samoei finished just ahead of Japheth Ng'ojoy in the 5,000. He crossed in 14:08.02.

Elias Koech and Dominic Kiprono Tanui were second in the 400 and 800, respectively. Koech, who won the 800 last year, ran 46.12 and Tanui posted a time of 1:47.85 in the 800.

John Alipio, Ward, Kiprono Tanui and Koech closed the meet taking the 1,600 relay in a regional time of 3:08.86

Two-sport stars Donald Buckram and Tufick Shadrawy were also point winners. Buckram posted a third-place finish in the 100 (10.69) and led off the 400 relay. Shadrawy was fifth in the triple jump, marking 45-6 1/2 (13.87).

Other point winners included Patrick Mutai in the 1,500 (sixth, 3:51.33) and 5,000 (14:22.63) and Nicodemus Ng'etich in the 1,500 (fifth, 3:49.25) and the 5,000 (sixth, 14:42.86).
