UTEP's Henderson Dottin and Kaisa Kiintonen advanced to the NCAA Championships by placing in the top five of the NCAA Midwest Regional at the Anderson Track Complex in College Station, Texas, Friday.
The Miners also had two individuals advance to Saturday's finals.
Dottin, a NCAA All-American in 2003, tied for third with SMU's Mickael Hanany, clearing 7-3 1/4 (2.22). Kansas State's Kyle Lancaster was the regional champion, jumping 7-4 1/2 (2.25).
Kiintonen finished fourth in the hammer, throwing 191-7 (58.39). She had entered her final three throws in second place, but was passed by Colorado State's Haley Hunt (195-5) and Montana State's Jen Allen (193-2) in the finals. Colorado State's Loree Smith was the champion with a meet record throw of 198-9 (60.57).
Fatimoh Muhammed will seek to secure her spot at the NCAA Championships in the 800-meter run. She had the fastest time of 2:08.10 in the two heats on Friday.
Freshman Daniel Ward moved into the finals in the 200-meter dash by winning his heat in 20.82. The time was the eighth fastest in the preliminaries. Sophomore Ryan Shields failed to advance by taking third in his heat with a time of 21.09.
Senior Dirk de Heer closed the night taking 20th in the 5000-meter run. He crossed in 15:04.63.
The NCAA Midwest Regional runs through Saturday.
