CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova pushed their winning streak to four while Eve Daniels and Carlotta Mencaglia also secured a win in doubles play to set the tone for the UTEP tennis team on the opening day of the Islander Invite Friday. Furthermore, Mencaglia picked up a win in singles action to put her at 2-0 on the day.
 
"We had a solid start in doubles, winning two of the three matches," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "Tuca (Abrahim) and Vero (Lebisova) are still on their winning streak in doubles. In singles, we had some very close matches but only Carlotta (Mencaglia) was able to secure a win. Vero was not able to play in singles due to her recovering from a cold. We are fighting hard but having a few too many ups and downs during the matches."
 
Abrahim and Lebisova, who became the first Miners' tandem to win a fall tournament flight in doubles since 2016 at the season-opening SDSU Invite, stayed hot with an 8-5 triumph against Saloni Tamang and Anna Emma Shasteen (Lamar). Daniels and Mencaglia blasted Anais Brion and Victoire Delattre (Texas A&M- CC), 8-1. Elena Dibattista and Zuzanna Szczepanska battled hard before coming up short against Noelia Lorca and Femke Tjon-A-Joe (Lamar), 8-6.
 
In singles action Mencaglia looks sharp in a 7-5, 6-0, vanquishing of Tjon-A-Joe (Lamar) to advance in her flight. Dibattista went down swinging, 7-5, 7-5, against Shasteen (Lamar).
 
Szczepanska was clipped, 6-3, 6-3, by Sofia Pinto (Texas A&M- CC). Abrahim fell by a score of 6-3, 6-1, to Ana Jolic (Lamar). Paloma Hennicaux was derailed 6-4, 6-2, by Margarita Roshka (Lamar). Daniels came up short 7-5, 6-3, to Tamang (Lamar). Lebisova was slated to compete against Naomi McKenzie (Texas A&M- CC), but she was unable to do so.
 
The Miners will continue play at the event on Saturday
