DALLAS – UTEP tennis standout
Veronika Lebisova has been chosen as the 2022-23 Conference USA Scholar Athlete for women's tennis, the league office revealed Thursday. The honor is voted upon the league's FARs and is presented to the top student-athlete in each conference-sponsored sport based on GPA, athletic achievement, and service.
"We are so proud of Vero for this achievement," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "She is going into her senior year with a perfect 4.0 GPA while playing number one singles and doubles. She is an incredibly focused and committed person with dreams of going to PT school after graduation. She is a great leader and sets a tremendous example for this team."
Lebisova has maintained a perfect 4.0 GPA while pursuing her degree in kinesiology throughout her collegiate career. She has garnered a spot on the CUSA All-Academic Team in back-to-back seasons. The rising senior is a three-year recipient of the CUSA Commissioner's Academic Medal (min. 3.75 cumulative GPA) and has also earned a spot on the CUSA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll (min. 3.00 cumulative GPA) on a trio of occasions. Her efforts in the classroom have helped the program boast the top GPA among all CUSA women's tennis teams in back-to-back years while producing the best GPA of all Miner squads for three consecutive years.
She has also thrived on the court, securing Team MVP accolades in 2022-23 after playing both No. 1 singles and doubles. She tied for the most wins in singles (12) on the squad while sharing second place for the most dual-match triumphs (seven). She teamed up with
Thassane Abrahim to forge a mark of 14-10 in doubles action (8-7 at No. 1 doubles). Her output allowed her tie for the team lead in both overall and dual-match doubles triumphs.
The pairing won a flight in doubles at the SDSU Invite, the first Miner tandem to do so since 2016. She also picked up a win in both singles in doubles at UAB, helping the Orange and Blue secure their first league victory since 2019 and initial CUSA road triumph since 2016.
She paced the Miners in overall singles wins with a record of 18-8 in 2021-22, including a stout 10-3 in dual play. Lebisova also tied for the team lead in both overall doubles wins (16) and dual victories (11). She burst onto the scene as a freshman in 2020-21, forging the best singles record (7-3) on the campaign in the COVID-19 affected year.
Lebisova also ventured into the community, accumulating 10 hours of service during the spring semester.
