EL PASO, Texas – After an encouraging showing at the season-opening NM State Invite, the UTEP tennis team will be back in action at the San Diego State Invitational from Friday through Sunday.
"We have been working hard getting ready for this extremely competitive tournament," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We know it will be a tough event, but I know we are ready to get back on the court again. We will have eight girls competing this weekend, and we are ready to put this team to the test."
The Miners picked up a combined nine victories in Las Cruces, N.M., including forging a mark of 4-2 in doubles play. Leading the charge was freshman
Hanna Telzynska, who won a back-draw title with a 2-1 record in singles action. She also combined forces with
Carlotta Mencaglia to snare runner-up accolades in the main draw of doubles.
Overall, five different UTEP players saw action, but that number is expected to increase to eight for this weekend.
DeCora Antoine,
Elena Dibattista, Mencaglia and Telzynska all secured victories in singles while
Emma Stuart and Antoine posted a triumph in doubles.
Joining the Miners in the field will be CSUN, Grand Canyon, Hope International, Minnesota and the host institution SDSU.
