LUBBOCK, Texas - The UTEP softball team recorded its first-ever victory over a Big 12 opponent in seven tries, defeating Texas Tech 2-1 in the opening game of a twinbill on Tuesday. The Miners fell 9-1 in the nightcap to move to 22-13 overall.

Stacie Townsend laced her sixth home run, the Miners' 34th in 2008, to lead UTEP offensively. She combined for four hits with run one and two RBI, including a 2-for-2 outing in the final game.

Townsend (10-6) struck out nine batters and allowed just one run to pick up the win. Nichole Tunget received the loss in the second game to fall to 7-3.

The Red Raiders out hit the Miners in the first game of the doubleheader 7-5 but UTEP was able to utilize one of two errors to score.

UTEP's two runs came in the fifth inning that started with a walk by Rachel Schaeffer and Jennifer Davis' single into rightfield.

With runners on the corners, a bunt attempt by Mariann Webb turned into a throwing error by TTU, sending Schaeffer home. Townsend hit a single into right field plating Davis for the 2-0 score.

Texas Tech was able to get off one run in the bottom of the seventh off a wild pitch.

Townsend opened Game 2 with her long ball to put UTEP on the board in the first inning.

The Red Raiders answered back with a round trip of their own, good for two runs to go ahead 2-1 after the first.

Texas Tech converted six hits into runs in the next frame to go ahead 8-1.

Jennifer Stalter and Townsend knocked singles in the third frame but were left stranded on base.

That would be the Miners' last chance, as Texas Tech scored once in the bottom of the third and then retired six-straight to win 9-1 in five innings.

UTEP returns home on Thursday to take on former Western Athletic foe Nevada at Helen of Troy Field. The doubleheader is slated for 3:00 p.m.
