UTEP vs. UCF Game 2
EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP softball team won both ends of a doubleheader, defeating UCF 1-0 and 6-5 on Saturday at Helen of Troy Field. The sweep improves the Miners to 25-17 and 6-8 in Conference USA action.
Stacie Townsend was the winning pitcher in the first game and moves to 11-8.
Townsend scattered five hits but held the Knights scoreless for her fourth shutout of the season. She fanned five in the outing and put away the last three batters in the nightcap to capture her first career save, securing the victory for Kelly Curran (6-4).
Townsend was 3-for-6 at the plate that included a two-run homer for a team-high eight on the season. She also laced her 11th double of 2008.
Camilla Carrera was also impressive, with four hits, one run and two RBI. She was 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
UTEP who rates sixth nationally in doubles per game, added three more to its season tally of 78. The Miners also added three long balls totaling 39 on the season to outhit UCF 15-14.
Ashley Ellis blasted her second home run of the season for the only run in the twinbill opener.
UCF had its chance in the top of the seventh, as a UTEP error, a walk and a groundout put runners on second and third. But a pop fly catch by Jennifer Stalter ended the threat.
Amber Bennett cranked a single into right field to open the bottom of the first in Game 2, but the Knights' defense tripped allowing her to take two extra bases.
With Bennett on third, Carrera knocked the ball into right field for the RBI.
Townsend plated Carrera with her two-run blast over the left-center fence to lift the Miners 3-0 after one inning of play.
A hit-by-pitch by Rachel Schaeffer opened the bottom of the second. Bennett followed with a double up the right-centerfield gap and Carrera drove Schaeffer home with a single.
With runners on the corners, Townsend walked to load the bases and Ashley Perez's groundout to second sent Bennett home for the 5-0 UTEP lead.
The Miners got off one run in the third frame off a solo longball by Jennifer Stalter.
UCF, who was held scoreless through 12 innings of play, opened the bottom of the sixth with two singles and a double to load the bases. A strikeout later and two pitching changes by the Miners, the Knights drew five walks good for five runs.
That would be all for the Knights, as UTEP was able to put away UCF for the 6-5 final.
UTEP looks to sweep its second conference series in the history of the program as the two teams will battle for the third and final game of the series tomorrow. First pitch is slated for noon.
