GREENVILLE, N.C. - Camilla Carrera was 5-for-6 at the plate to help lead UTEP past East Carolina, 3-1, in the final game of a doubleheader on Saturday in Greenville, N.C.. The win ended a 10-game conference road losing streak that dated back to April 2007.
The Miners dropped the opening game 2-1 to move to 26-19 and 7-10 in Conference USA play.
Carrera was a flawless 2-for-2 in Game 1 and carried the momentum into the nightcap to help propell the Miners to a much needed victory.
Jennifer Davis also contributed to the Miners' win, going 3-for-5 with one run and Amber Bennett posted two runs on three hits with one RBI.
Stacie Townsend had two hits and three RBI, all which came in the second game.
Townsend (11-10) was the losing pitcher in the series opener, allowing two runs on three hits and walked one.
Kelly Curran was the winning pitcher in the nightcap to improve to 7-4 on the season while Nichole Tunget, who came in relief, received her second save of the season, the sixth of her career.
The Miners outhit the Pirates 14-10 for the day and both teams tripped defensively, committing three errors each.
UTEP was the first team to strike in the first game, as Davis knocked the first hit of the day to open the top of the third. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and came home off a single by Bennett.
ECU answered back in the bottom of the frame, as they connected for two singles and a fielder's choice to load the bases. A lob just left of the pitcher's circle caused a UTEP error, allowing a runner to score, tying the game 1-1.
A deep blast by the Pirates dropped just inside the centerfield fence for a mere single, but good enough to drive home the go ahead run and 2-1 ECU final.
The heartbreak loss mark the 10th game of 2008 that was decided by one run.
Bennett led off the nightcap with a single into the right-center gap and a passed ball advanced her to second.
Carrera knocked her third hit of the day into centerfield sending Bennett to third.
With runners on the corners, Townsend hit the ball just past second base, driving Bennett home for the 1-0 UTEP lead in the top of the first.
A home run in the bottom of the stanza tied the game at one a piece.
UTEP added two runs in the top of the third that started with a two-base throwing error by the Pirates sending Rachel Schaeffer to second.
Amber Bennett hit an infield single, advancing Schaeffer to third. Townsend laced the ball into left center, plating Schaeffer and Bennett giving the Miners a two run lead.
Backed by a solid defensive effort, the Miners held on for the 3-1 win.
The two teams conclude the series tomorrow at noon. The Miners return home Saturday, April 26 and Sunday April 27 in the final home series of the season against Southern Miss. UTEP will bid farwell to its first ever four-year senior class on Sunday.
