Not even Mother Nature could stop the UTEP softball team on Sunday, as following a 30-minute delay due to lighting the Miners scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning en route to an emotional 4-2 win at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

The effort improves the Miners to 27-19 and 8-10 within Conference USA play on the year while the Pirates fall to 30-23 and 6-11, respectively. The triumph secures the first conference road series win since 2006 and just the second in program history. Additionally, it is the second series victory of the 2008 season. Moreover, the Orange and Blue have already equaled the most league wins in a single campaign (eight), and have a great opportunity to obliterate that mark with six C-USA tilts remaining this year.

Stacie Townsend picked up the triumph to improve her slate to 12-10 on the year. The 12 victories establish a single-season high in program history. Townsend also is the career leader at UTEP, after she eclipsed that standard last week. She was the hero offensively, as well, with out a clutch two-out single in the sixth to vault the Miners ahead at 4-2.

Things had looked grim prior to that, as the Orange and Blue trailed 2-0 with two outs and no one on base. The rally started innocently enough, with Ashley Perez lacing a single. Mariann Webb then worked ECU's Brooke Swann for a walk, before Rachel Schaeffer brought home Perez with a single.

Amber Bennett plated the game-tying run in the form of Ashly Ellis (who had re-entered as a pinch runner for Webb.) with a smash single. Camilla Carrera reached on a single as well to set the stage for Townsend's heroics.

The Miners will be back in action on Saturday at home for a 3 p.m. double header against Southern Miss. On Sunday, UTEP will honor its first four-year senior class in school history prior to the 12 p.m. start.
