MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The UTEP softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader, falling 1-0 and 6-2, to Memphis on Saturday in Tennessee. The Miners fall to 23-16 and 4-7 in C-USA play while Memphis improves to 18-19, 2-8 in league action.
Stacie Townsend (10-7), who was the losing pitcher in the first game, struck out every batter in the order at least once to post a career-high 12 strikeouts. She gave up one run on six hits and allowed four walks.
Kelly Curran moves to 5-4 with the Game 2 loss. She fanned just one batter in three innings of play and Nichole Tunget, who came in relief struck out three.
The Miners out hit Memphis 10-9 but left 13 runners stranded, 11 in scoring position.
UTEP connected for four doubles, one home run with two RBI and committed two errors on the day.
Townsend retired eight-straight to open the first game before allowing a runner on base.
Memphis had two of their four hits in the bottom of the fourth as back-to-back doubles gave the Tigers the 1-0 lead.
The Tigers loaded the bases again in the bottom of the sixth, but Townsend pulled herself out of the situation collecting her 11th and 12th strikeouts of the game.
The Miners had a last-chance opportunity in the top of the seventh that started with a single into leftfield by Ashley Ellis. She advanced to second when a bunt by Jennifer Davis arrived safely at first off an infield miscue.
A groundout advanced Davis to second and Ellis to third and Rachel Schaeffer loaded the bases as she went to first off a hit-by-pitch. UTEP's comeback was short-lived as Memphis retired the final two batters of the inning for the win.
Perez blasted her fourth home run in Game 2 to put the Miners on the board in the top of the second.
Memphis answered back with a run of its own in the bottom of the stanza. The Tigers scored again in the next frame after a single, a passed ball and a wild pitch scored Leila Dolfo for the 2-1 lead.
Memphis continued its scoring rally, collecting three runs off three hits in the bottom of the fourth including a home run blast by Tori Gross.
The Miners brought in Tunget to stop the rally. She put away three straight.
After a strikeout, UTEP got on base off a single up the middle by Jennifer Stalter. She stole two bases to get to third and put UTEP in scoring position.
Amber Bennett laced a double into centerfield, driving Stalter home.
The Tigers put up another run in the bottom of the sixth off a bases loaded sacrifice fly for the 6-2 advantage heading into the top of the seventh.
UTEP trying for a comeback for the second time, started with a double by Simone Holland. She advanced to third off a passed ball but remained as three consecutive batters were put away.
The Miners conclude the series on Sunday in a final game slated for 12 p.m. CST. They return home on April 12 to take on UCF in a three-game tilt.
