HOUSTON, Texas - The UTEP softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to ninth-ranked Houston , 5-0 and 1-0, on Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium in Houston, Texas.
The Miners fall to 29-22, 10-13 in Conference USA while the Cougars improve to 47-8, 20-2 in league play.
Camilla Carrera recorded the Miners' only hit in the first game to go 1-for-3 and Jennifer Davis, Jennifer Stalter and Stacie Townsend knocked singles in the nightcap.
Kelly Curran (8-5) and Nichole Tunget (8-6) were the losing pitchers, respectively.
Houston's pitching staff combined for 23 strikeouts on the day. Angel Shamblin (29-2) fanned 12 batters in the day's opener while Barbie Love struck out 11 and moves 11-3.
With an out on the board in the top of the first, Carrera laced a single up the middle for UTEP's only hit of the game.
Laurie Wagner's three-run homer in the bottom of the frame put Houston on the board. Katie Bush singled and two outs later, Jennifer Klinkert walked. With two runners on base, Wagner belted her long ball over the leftfield fence.
The Cougars scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth that started with a short single in the infield. A sacrifice bunt put a runner at second and two walks later, the bases were loaded. Klinkert drew a her fourth walk of the day to score Baillie Lott for the RBI and Wagner secured her fourth RBI of the game after getting hit to get to base.
Despite the score, the Miners' defensive effort was impressive, as UTEP turned a double play, made a handful of diving catches and picked-off runners to prevent the Cougars from posting more runs on the board than the 5-0 final.
After five scoreless innings in the nightcap, the Cougars broke up the second game in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Klinkert and a double by Wagner to put Houston in scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Haley Valis plated Klinkert for the 1-0 go ahead score and final.
It was Jennifer Davis' defensive play that held the Cougars to just one run as she notched seven putouts in centerfield, a single-season record for an outfielder. Davis had back-to-back putouts in the first inning and her catch over the fence in the bottom of the fourth kept Houston from putting more runs on the board.
The Miners will close out their 2008 regular season Sunday at 12 p.m. CST. They will return to Houston on Thursday, May 8th in their first-ever conference tournament appearance.
