Softball Season Ends With Loss To UCF

HOUSTON, Texas - A day after securing its first 30-win season, the UTEP softball team fell 3-0 to UCF in the semifinal game of the Conference USA Softball Championships in Houston, Texas on Friday. The Miners end the 2008 campaign with a 30-24 overall record and a 10-14 finish in league play.

Amber Bennett and Jennifer Davis knocked UTEP's only hits of the day, both in the bottom of the third.

Stacie Townsend received the loss and moves to 12-11 on the season. The first team All-Conference USA selection allowed three runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Nichole Tunget came in relief fanned three of her own.

After two scoreless innings of play, UCF's Abby McClain opened the top of the third with a double into left-center. Tiffany Lane's bunt single put runners on the corners and a throwing error by UTEP's Rachel Schaeffer sent McCain home for UCF's first run of the day. With the error, Lane was able to advance two bases to get to third. The Knights' third run came off an RBI-single by Hillary Barrow.

UCF added another run in the top of the fifth after a blast by Lane hopped over the right field fence for the automatic double. She scored off a groundout by Marquita Council.

Despite the loss, UTEP ends the season with 30 overall wins and 10 conference victories, the most in its five year history. The Miners also graduated its first four year senior class and captured two first team all-conference selections the first team honor in its short history.

The senior class will leave UTEP owning most of the Miners' career and season records while combining for one all-conference selection, three all-academic honors, three NFCA academic scholars, two Conference USA Academic Medals, five Commissioner's Honor Roll honorees, seven grand slams and two no-hitters.
