TEMPE, Ariz. - The UTEP softball team lost to Oregon, 4-2, and Portland State, 5-2, on Saturday at the Tempe Sports Complex in Tempe, Ariz. The Miners fall to 1-3 on the season.
Camilla Carrera, Ashley Ellis and Kristin Lusby were all 2-for-6 (.333) on the day.
After three scoreless innings of play, Oregon broke open the game, scoring one run in the top of the fourth of a sacrifice bunt that drove home Monique Fuiava who reached bases on a double down the leftfield line.
The Ducks added three more in the next frame after two back-to-back singles put runners in scoring position. Fuiava walked to load the bases and Kelsey Chambers knocked a single into left field for two runs. With Carlyn Re at the plate, UTEP's Carrera overthrew third in an attempt to pick off Fuiava, who scored on the error. Chambers was chased down by UTEP's defense who was trying to get to third on the error. The Miners were able to chase her down to end Oregon's scoring rally.
Carrera displayed a good defensive effort despite the error, as she was able to pick off a runner and catch two stealing base.
UTEP was able to get an offense started in the bottom of the sixth with a walk by Stacie Townsend. Carrera then belted a home run over centerfield for the two-run score.
After retiring the Ducks in order, the Miners were looking for the seventh inning comeback. With two outs in the bottom of the fame, Amber Bennett knocked the ball down the leftfield line for a double. But that would be all, as Townsend flied out to left, losing 4-2.
The Miners connected for three hits compared with Oregon's nine and both teams committed two errors in the game.
Portland State was quick to get on the board in the second game, connecting on four hits good for two runs.
UTEP tied the game in the top of the second. Chelsea Troupe, who made it to base after being hit by the pitcher, scored off a Viking error and Ellis, who belted a double, scored off an RBI single by Diana Parada.
PSU added two runs in the bottom of the fifth off an error by UTEP's Stacie Townsend.
After a scoreless sixth, the Miners' Amber Bennett was hit to get on first. An out later, Townsend reached on a dropped fly by the Vikings' centerfielder, Jackie Heide. A wild pitch scored Bennett and put Townsend at third.
Carrera was intentionally walked. A sacrifice fly by Troupe, brought Townsend home to tie the score at 4-4.
UTEP's comeback came to an end when an RBI-double with a runner on base, gave Portland State the run to end the game in the bottom of the seventh.
The Miners connected for seven hits against the Vikings, but left seven stranded.
The Vikings had the opportunity to score again in the second inning when De'Chauna Skinner tried to steal home, but UTEP's swift defense put the play to rest.
The Miners will conclude action at the Kajikawa Classic against tournament host Arizona State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
