UTEP vs. Texas - Box Score
EL PASO, Texas - UTEP's Ashley Ellis hit a grand slam home run in the top of the first inning, but that was all the Miners would get, as they fell 13-4 to Texas on Sunday at Helen of Troy Field. The Miners fall to 11-9 on the season, while Texas improves to 14-4.
The base clearing home run was the third of Ellis' career and the first for the Miners this season.
The Miners were held to just three hits by the Longhorn's Torrey Schroeder (6-1), two of which came in the first stanza.
Texas opened with a two run long ball over the left field line by Loryn Johnson to give the Longhorns the 2-0 lead after the top of the first.
UTEP's Chelsea Troupe singled past shortstop with one out on the board. Camilla Carrera made it safe to first on a fielder's choice and Troupe advanced to second off a dropped ball by Texas' Alexis Bennett. Stacie Townsend was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Ellis drove them home with her home run blast on the very first pitch.
The Longhorns tied in the following frame with back-to-back RBI infield singles. But it was the fifth and sixth inning that got away from the Miners as UTEP gave up four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth. The Longhorns cranked out five hits in the sixth frame and drew a walk to give them the 13-4 advantage.
UTEP's Chelsea Mayer was the losing pitcher and moves to 0-1 on the season. She scattered four hits, struck out one and gave up one run in a little over one inning of work. Mayer came in relief of Townsend who gave up four runs on seven hits and fanned three. Kelly Curran also saw action in the circle tossing the final inning and a third for the Orange and Blue.
The Miners head to 10th-ranked Arizona for a doubleheader series on Wednesday, March 4. They return home on March 7th as they open Conference USA play against Memphis.
