UTEP vs. Marshall Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - After taking a 6-0 lead, the Miners gave up seven unanswered runs as Marshall staged a comeback victory, topping UTEP 7-6 on a dark and damp Saturday in Huntington.
The game was late to start, three and a half hours to be exact as inclement weather kept the game from its original 1 p.m. start.
The Miners move to 13-13 and 2-2 in Conference USA with the loss, while Marshall improves to 12-8, 1-0 in league action.
Stacie Townsend (7-9) received the loss, despite striking out eight batters in the game. She fanned five of the first seven batters she faced but could not hold on for the victory.
Jennifer Davis was the Miners' big hitter, going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.
The Miners took advantage of three Herd errors, scoring on the trio to start the game as Chelsea Troupe led off with a walk to first. Camilla Carrera doubled to right field moving Troupe to third.
Townsend sent a fly ball to center field for the out, but as Troupe attempted the run home for the sacrifice, Marshall's centerfielder, Jocelyn Bitner overthrew the ball home, plating Troupe and the catcher, Melanie Stoehr lobbed the ball to an empty home plate, scoring Carrera. UTEP was able to score again off another Marshall error to take a 3-0 lead.
Back-to-back singles by Becky Smith and Troupe and an intentional walk given to Carrera loaded the bases. Ellis, after a full count, was hit by a pitch, scoring Smith for the RBI. Davis laced a ground ball to left that drove in Troupe and Carrera to lift the Miners to a 6-0 lead.
The Herd was able to stifle the Miners in the next frame and came within two runs off five hits and a double steal that scored one run, but still trailed the Miners 6-4.
Marshall tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after Bitner knocked her third short infield single. Jackson singled to left and Bitner advanced to third off a UTEP error. Stoehr hit a single into center that was diving catch by UTEP's Smith that was ruled fair for the RBI. An attempted double steal scored the tying run off a fielder's choice.
UTEP's defense tripped in the bottom of the six, as Marshall's Rachel Schmitt knocked a double into left field. A pitching change by the Miners was ineffective, as a sacrifice fly and a UTEP error scored the winning run for the Herd.
The two teams will make up the second game of the doubleheader on Sunday, and play the final game of the series. First pitch of the doubleheader is tentatively scheduled for 9 a.m. EDT.
