SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The UTEP softball team swept UT-San Antonio, 2-1 and 11-3, on Tuesday at Roadrunner Field. The Miners improve to 17-16 overall and remain at 4-5 in league action.

Stacie Townsend struck out 12 batters in the opening game of the twin bill, tying the second highest of her career. She allowed just one run, unearned, and scattered four hits after tossing eight complete innings of play to improve to 9-10 on the season.

Kelly Curran (7-5), who pitched the second game, was just as impressive in the circle, allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in six innings of work.

The Miners also added two home runs to their season total as Camilla Carrera and Shea Lodes went yard for the day. The Miners have 41 long balls with the two belts.

Neither of the two games were regulation, as the Miners and the Roadrunners were knotted at one apiece after seven innings to send the game into extra frames. UTEP prevailed after having plenty of experiences, as the Miners are now 4-1 in extra innings games in 2009.

The final game lasted just six stanzas, as the Orange and Blue put away UTSA, 11-3, for the eight-run mercy rule.

The two teams capitalized each other's errors to start the day, as UTEP and UTSA scored one run in the first inning off of miscues.

Carrera led off the game with a walk and moved into scoring position of Townsend's single. A two-out throwing error by UTSA, sent Carrera home to put the Miners on the board.

UTSA answered back, as a throw to first got away, allowing the Runners' lead off, Rudi Cantu to get safely to base. A sacrifice bunt moved her over to second and she scored on a ground out to second.

The two teams remained knotted through seven innings of play, send the game into the top of the eighth.

Carrera led off the top of the frame belting a homer in the first pitch over left-center field hitting the scoreboard for the home run. It was all the Miners needed for the 2-1 victory.

The Roadrunners opened the nightcap scoring two unearned runs in the first inning off a two-out RBI single by Danye Holmes.

The Miners answered back in the top of the second as Shea Lodes hit a dinger over left field scoring Becky Smith who reached on a bunt single.

The Miners pulled ahead 5-2 in the top of the third that started with back-to-back singles by Townsend and Kristin Lusby. Ashley Ellis ripped a hard triple to right field and came home when UTSA's Krista Sitka missed the cutoff pass.

UTSA picked up its final run in the bottom of the frame off a deep single to right field to cut the Miners' lead to 5-3.

The Miners weren't finished, adding a four run cushion to their lead. Jennifer Stalter hit a line drive into left field and an out later, Townsend sent a single up the middle. Kristin Lusby, who finished the day going 2-for-4 with two runs, made it to first on a fielder's choice with Stalter out at third on the play.

Townsend and Lusby stole third and second, respectively and Ashley Ellis drove them home off a single into left field. Ellis came home on the same play, as a throw to home got away. UTEP had a 7-3 advantage after five.

UTEP scored four runs in the sixth frame to cap off the doubleheader series that started with a one out double by Becky Smith. Lodes singled to center, driving Smith home.

Kelynn Frye hit the ball to third who overthrew first for the error, loading the bases.

Stalter belted her second hit of the day, driving Lodes home from second. Carrera struck out and Townsend made it to first off a fielder's choice as UTSA attempted to get Frye out at home but was ruled safe. Stalter scored the final run of the day as Lusby knocked the ball down the left field line for the RBI.

The Miners next take on Texas State in a single game Wednesday, March 25 at 1 p.m. (MDT). They return to conference action on Sat., March 29 at UAB.
