BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UTEP softball team captured its third conference series of 2009, defeating UAB, 6-1, in Birmingham on Sunday. The Miners improve to 20-17 overall and 6-6 in Conference USA.

Four of the Miners' six runs came at the hands of Camilla Carrera and Shea Lodes who each hit a pair of home runs in the game to bring UTEP two shy of its 50th.

The two combined for half of the Miners' eight hits, as Carrera finished 2-for-5 with two runs and three RBI and Lodes was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.

UTEP's bats were not the only highlight, as Stacie Townsend was electrifying, securing her fifth consecutive victory in the circle to move to 12-10 for the season. The junior struck out nine batters, tossed a no-hitter through five innings and scattered four in the final two frames.

The Miners opened the series finale with a lead-off home run by Carrera. After holding the Blazers scoreless in the first, Shea Lodes followed with another lead-off homer in the second.

Lodes was not finished, as she belted another dinger in the top of the fourth. An out later, Jennifer Stalter doubled to the right-center gap that hit the fence and Carrera slammed the ball over the same spot for the two run long ball.

UAB scored its only run in the bottom of the sixth off a home run belt by Meagan Hornsby.

The Miners take a break from league play to take on Tennessee Tech in a doubleheader on Tuesday and Tennessee for a single game Wednesday. UTEP will take the weekend off and resume action in California to take on San Diego State for a contest on April 7. They return home on April 10th to open a C-USA series against East Carolina.
