EL PASO, Texas - Chelsea Troupe laced her eighth home run of the season, but it wasn't enough, as the Miners dropped a heartbreaker to Memphis, 10-8, Sunday at Helen of Troy Field.

Despite the loss, the Miners win the series 2-1 to open Conference USA and move to 13-12 on the season.

Troupe's long ball ties the freshman record set by sophomore Camilla Carrera a year ago and ties for third in UTEP's season recordbooks. Troupe, who batted .818 (9-for-11) for the series, ended the day going 2-for-2 with three runs, two walks and one RBI.

Carrera and Amber Bennett also had home run blasts that scored the first three runs in the contest to bring the Miners' season total to 34.

UTEP suffered in the fourth and sixth innings as they gave up four and six runs, respectively.

After giving up the lead in the top of the fourth, UTEP answered with three runs in the next frame off Memphis miscues. With the bases loaded, Troupe flew home on a passed ball and Carrera, who rounded third, reached safely on an error in an attempt to force her out at the plate. Stacie Townsend made it safely home off an RBI-single by Courtney Ware.

UTEP cushioned its lead in the sixth stanza off back-to-back long balls by Troupe and Carrera.

But it was a hard day for Townsend, who was the losing pitcher, as the junior hurler scattered eight hits, including six short bloopers to right field that scored six runs for the Tigers to give them the 10-8 advantage.

Jennifer Davis was the only hit the Miners would get in the bottom of the seventh, as UTEP fell short of the series sweep.

Despite the loss, the Miners secure a three-way tie for second place in the league with East Carolina and UAB. Tulsa, who swept a three-game series from UCF, stands in first in the league's opening weekend.

The Miners return to action on Thursday, March 12 in a single game against North Texas in Denton, before returning to league play in Huntington, W.Va. versus Marshall. UTEP returns home March 21-22 for a three game home stand against Houston.
