HOUSTON, TEXAS- The UTEP tennis team received a straight set victory from freshman Marie LeBlond and a win at No. 3 doubles but was unable to find its form in the other matches in an eventual 6-1 loss at Lamar Friday afternoon.
The Miners (0-5) had been idle since Jan. 30 but could not convert the time off into a triumph, with the Cardinals (1-0) successfully protecting their house in their season opener.
Action opened up with doubles play where Leblond/Rebeca Calvillo bounced Lamar's Helene Czudek/Diana Mendez, 8-6, at No. 3. The team point would go the way of the Cardinals, though, as result of triumphs at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
Martina Trierweiler/Carolina DeLuca couldn't get on track in an 8-4 setback to Kaltrina Harbuzi/Mariaryeni Gutierrez at the top slot. Ximena Fuentes/Gabi Vazquez came up shy by the same score against Natalia Mayagoitia/Alicia Porte at No. 2.
LeBlond was in top form at the fifth position in her match against Pennessi. She rolled to the aforementioned straight-set victory, 6-2, 6-3. The Miners were not quite as sharp on the other courts, though, allowing Lamar to emerge victorious.
Vazquez went back-and-forth with Porte at No. 3 singles. She was dropped by a count of 6-2 in the first set but rallied in the second set behind a 6-4 triumph. The freshman couldn't carry the momentum into the last set, though, with Porte picking up the 6-1 win.
Fuentes was toppled by Mendez, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 6 singles while Calvillo came up shy, 6-4, 6-2, to Harbuzi at No. 2 singles. DeLuca into a white-hot Gutierrez at the top slot, and was sent packing by a final score of 6-0, 6-0.
The Miners will continue their busy weekend by challenging Sam Houston State at 11 a.m. MST Saturday before locking up with Conference USA foe Houston at 10 a.m. MST Sunday.
