LAS CRUCES, N.M- The UTEP tennis team used an all-around effort to topple I-10 rival New Mexico State, 4-3, on the road Wednesday afternoon. Rebeca Calvillo, Carolina DeLuca and Ximena Fuentes all secured straight set triumphs in singles play, while the tandems of Martina Trierweiler/DeLuca and Calvillo/Marie LeBlond emerged victorious in doubles action to lead the way.

The effort is a nice reversal of trend for the Miners (5-11), who sported a mark of 3-10 against the Aggies (7-5) dating to 2000. Additionally it marks the first road triumph in the series for UTEP since 2007.

"I'm very proud of the ladies," UTEP head coach Victor Aguilar said. "It was a tremendous job. They stepped it up. There was certainly great leadership from Ximena Fuentes today."

Action opened up in doubles, where it was clear from the onset that things would be different than from years past. Trierweiler/DeLuca dispatched the home side's top pairing of Ginet Pinero/Isabela Kulaif, 8-4. The Miners locked up the doubles point and early lead in the match thanks to Calvillo/LeBlond defeating Ros-Polly Nguyen/Natalia Salum, 8-5, at No. 3. While NM State's Manon Sylvain/Jodie Williams bested Fuentes/Vazquez, 8-0, at No. 2 the momentum was still with UTEP heading into singles play.

Fuentes set the tone with a nearly flawless performance at No. 6 singles. She routed Jodie Williams, 6-0, 6-1.Calvillo was dominant in her match against Sylvain at the second spot. She rolled past her foe, 6-3, 6-1. DeLuca also impressed, dispatching Pinero 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

The Aggies picked up triumphs at the other courts, but those proved to be a moot point as result of the outcome at No. 2, 3 and No. 6 singles. Trierweiler was tripped up by Kulaif, 7-6, 6-3, at the top slot while Glebova was derailed by Witte, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 5. Salum outlasted Vazquez, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 4 but the Orange and Blue ultimately enjoyed the last laugh.

UTEP will be idle until playing at Conference USA foe Memphis at 8:30 a.m. MDT on April 8.
