SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.– The UTEP tennis team was upended in a pair of road matches on Sunday. The Miners (1-8) fell at Texas State, 6-1, to start the day before immediately venturing to square off at UTSA, which resulted in a 4-1 defeat.
They were put in the undesirable position of a doubleheader at different sites due to poor weather in the area on Saturday, but competed hard in both matches. On a more positive scheduling note, UTEP is now poised to play the next five at the El Paso Tennis Club. The Orange and Blue had opened the year with seven of nine away from home.
Dariya Abdrakhmanova was the standout for UTEP at TSU, emerging victorious at No. 4 singles. She toppled Gabriela Rojas, 6-4, 0-6, 10-7, with a super tiebreaker used in lieu of a third set due to the team outcome being decided.
Martina Trierweiler showed good form only to drop a pair of closely-contested sets, 7-6, 6-4, against Jessica Kahts at No. 1 singles. Rebeca Calvillo couldn't get on track at No. 2 singles, and was dealt a 6-2, 6-1 setback by Melissa Hadad. It was a similar story for Gabi Vazquez at the third position, falling 6-1, 6-1, to Rachel Baldree.
Mariana Perez cooled off the previously white hot Marie LeBlond, but needed a super tiebreaker to do so. The final score was 6-3, 0-6, 10-7, in Perez’s favor at No. 5 singles. Freshman Anastasiya Sylenko ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Francesca Bernes at No. 6 singles, dropping the match by a final count of 6-1, 6-0.
Earlier in doubles action Trierweiler/Calvillo were derailed by Kahts/Hadad, 8-4, at the top slot. Abdrakhmanova/Sylenko fell by the same score to Perez/Baldree at No. 3 while Rojas/Van Den Bergh dispatched LeBlond/Vazquez, 8-2.
UTEP then got back on the road in order to challenge UTSA. Action initiated in doubles, where all three matches were closely contested. The Miners took care of business, though, with triumphs at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. LeBlond/Vazquez toppled Micaela Silva/Vivian Carrillo, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles. UTEP grabbed the point and the early lead thanks to Abdrakhmanova/Sylenko derailing Natalie Hand/Kavya Menon, 8-6, at the third position.
Stefanie Peana/Isabelle Jonsson held off Trierweiler/Calvillo, 8-6, at the top slot, but it proved to be a moot point. The Orange and Blue vied to carry the momentum into singles play, but couldn’t get it done.
Silva snuck past Vazquez, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 while Irene Gonzalez held on for a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against LeBlond at No. 6. Sylenko battled Hand at No. 5, only to fall 6-4, 6-2 while Jonsson managed a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Calvillo at No. 2 singles.
Matches at No. 1 and No. 4 singles did not finish, due to the team outcome no longer being in doubt.
UTEP will initiate the aforementioned homestand when it challenges UTPB at 1 p.m. MST on Friday. The match will be held at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free.
