TUCSON, Ariz. - The No. 10 ranked Arizona Wildcats (15-1) scored early and often to defeat the UTEP Miners (6-11), 14-1 in five innings, on Wednesday afternoon at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
The Wildcats scored six runs in the first inning, as Kellie Fox hit a three-run home run to left field and Mo Mercado rifled a two-run double to lead the early charge.
Miraya Montiel put the Miners on the board as bases were loaded in the top second. The Tucson, Ariz. native hit a single to right field that scored Kayla Black. Kenzie Fowler loaded the bases as she walked three straight batters -Black, Alanna Leasau and McKenzey Finley - but that was all the offense the Miners could produce.
It was the second game in a row in which the Wildcat pitchers allowed one hit. Fowler and Nancy Bowling combined for five innings of work, six walks and three Ks.
The Miners will travel to Stockton, Calif. to compete at the 2014 Libby Matson Tournament hosted by Pacific (Feb. 28 - March 2). UTEP will open with Washington (Noon MT) and San Jose State (4:30 p.m.) on day one.
