NORFOLK, Va. - The 2014 campaign came to a close as the UTEP women's tennis team came up short against UAB, 4-2, on Wednesday at the 2014 Conference USA Women's Championships in the Folkes Stevens Tennis Center.

Davina Meza and Gabi Vazquez gave the Miners (12-13) a quick 2-0 lead, but the Blazers (9-14) rallied back on court No. 1, 3, 5 and 6.

On court No. 2, Meza won her 24th singles match of the season, defeating Amy Lowther, 6-3, 6-1, while Vazquez won her 51st-career singles match, taking down Elanie Simon, 6-2, 6-2, on court No. 4.

Rebeca Calvillo fell to Rachel Daniell at the No. 1 position, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, but not without a fight as Calvillo came back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the third set. Marie LeBlond lost to Pardis Kianoush, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 3 spot.

With the match tied 2-2, the focus turned to Daphne Visscher on court No. 5 and Matilda Rose Tench at No. 6. Visscher took an early 3-2 lead during the first set, but Catherine Ragon stormed back to win 6-3. Ragon eventually won the second set, 7-6 (7-3), to give her squad a 3-2 advantage. Tench also played a tight match, but fell to Paula Castro, 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).

Though UTEP lost, the team finished with 12 wins as it did last season. The 24 wins during the two-year span were the most since the Miners won 26 matches in 2009 and 2010. Prior to the 2013 season, the women's squad won a combined eight matches in 2011 and 2012.

Meza wrapped her first season with the Orange and Blue with much success. The junior transfer won a combined 47 matches, making it the third-best season in program history. Tanja Magoc won 51 in 1998 and Ana Brnas won 48 in 2001.

Meza and Calvillo notched a 23-9 doubles record, the most single-season doubles wins in program history. The duo also recorded a 15-4 mark during dual-match play at the No. 1 position.

Visscher got off to a slow start, only winning two matches during the fall tournament season and collegiate career. But the freshman improved during the spring season, forging a 14-9 record (2-1 at No. 4, 12-8 at No. 5).
