GREENVILLE, N.C. - UTEP (16-34, 8-15 Conference USA) was eliminated from advancing to the 2014 C-USA Tournament after falling to East Carolina (27-18, 14-9), 6-3, in game one of Saturday's double header, and came up short, losing 2-1, during game two at ECU Softball Stadium.
UTEP 3, East Carolina 6
Down 2-0 in the second inning, Colleen Hohman lined a solo shot to center field - her 11th home run of the season for the Miners' first run.
The Pirates took a 3-1 lead on a controversial call in the third inning. Abby Wynne singled in Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin from second base. Second baseman Miraya Montiel threw the ball to catcher McKenzey Finley as Kaluhiokalani-Glackin rounded third. It looked as Finley tagged the runner out, but the umpire called the runner safe to the chagrin of the Miners.
The following inning, Alanna Leasau plated Ashley Eldridge on a sac-fly to bring the Miners within one run in the fourth inning.
But East Carolina tacked on two runs in the fifth inning and a solo home run in the sixth to finish the Miners' postseason chances.
Eldridge went 2-for-3, while Hohman finished 2-for-2. Erika Arcuri had another hit on the season, adding to her team-high 59 and scored a run in the sixth inning. Tahla Wade also connected on a single.
UTEP 1, East Carolina 2
The Miners took an early 1-0 lead when Kawehiokalani Netane scored on an error. But the Pirates scored two runs in the fourth inning and never looked back.
Hohman pitched a solid six innings, striking out five and only walking two in the loss.
The Miners threatened in the sixth inning with base runners, but second baseman Kristi Oshiro made all three outs on clutch defensive stops. She made a diving stop to her right side for a ground out, made a running catch on a short hit and another diving cut off on an unassisted out.
Montiel finished 2-for-2, while Eldridge, Hohman and Netane each tallied a hit.
UTEP will conclude the 2014 campaign on Sunday at 10 a.m. MT at ECU Softball Stadium.
