LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Kaitlin Fifield pitched six strong innings, fanning six batters (five looking), but UNLV defeated UTEP, 2-0, at Eller Media Stadium on Sunday on the final day of the Wilson/DeMarini Desert Classic.

The Miners (2-8) didn't get any offense going till the fourth inning when Ashely Eldridge broke up a no-hitter. It was one of four hits for the Miners on the day.

Down 2-0, in the top seventh, the Miners put two on with two outs. Kaitlin Ryder walked on four straight pitches, and Taylor Sargent singled to center field on a pinch hit. But the rally fell short as Runnin' Rebels pitcher Kwyn Cooper registered a strikeout looking to end the ball game.

Cooper pitched a complete game, striking out five and only walking one. Her offense contributed to the cause with a run in the first inning - an Emily Haslinger RBI double to right field that plated Garie Blando. Haslinger recorded RBI no. 2 on a ground out to short that scored Fahren Glackin.

Though the bases were loaded on Fifield twice, she was able to pull herself out of the jams. The first came during the third inning when Fifield forced an Alyssa Cordova ground out to the pitcher. The Rebels would load the bases again during the sixth inning, but the El Paso native forced another ground out.

Fifield, in her last four games, has pitched 17.2 innings, with only three earned runs, 15 Ks and a 1.19 ERA.

Kiki Pepi and Jade Rodriguez each tallied a hit, while Rodriguez had a stolen base during the fifth inning.
