TUCSON, Ariz. - The UTEP softball team lost another pair of contests, as No. 15 Arizona cruised 9-1 in five innings, and UT Arlington had a seven-run fifth inning during a 12-6 victory on Friday night at the Wildcat Invitational in Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
The Miners drop to 2-15 on the season.
UTEP 1, Arizona 9 (5)
The Wildcats' Katiyana Mauga hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Kellie Fox singled in the game-winning run in the fifth as Arizona head coach Mike Candrea picked up career win No. 1,400.
The Miners took a 1-0 lead when Tahla Wade crossed home plate on an error. Kawehiokalani Netane singled to center field, advancing Wade to third. The center fielder didn't field the ball cleanly, allowing UTEP to take the early advantage.
Arizona scored two runs during the bottom first as Chelsea Goodacre and Mo Mercado each tallied RBI.
UTEP loaded the bases with no outs down 2-1 in the top second, as Danielle Pearson, Linda Garcia and Jade Rodriguez all singled. But a strikeout and a double play ended the inning.
Courtney Clayton added a single in the first inning for UTEP.
UTEP 6, UT Arlington 12
UTEP had a short-lived 3-1 lead in the top fifth before UT Arlington's bats came alive. Netane singled with two outs, while her steal at second base caused multiple fielding errors. The first was on the catcher, as Netane advanced to third. The second baseman committed the second error that paved the way for Netane to score the run.
But the Mavericks piled on seven runs during the bottom half to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Kacey Everett slammed a two-run home run, while Jolene Schaefer and Mya Anderson each recorded a pair of RBI, and Rebecca Stokes singled in a run during the big frame.
The Miners cut the lead to 8-6 when Taylor Sargent tallied her second RBI of the game - a double that plated Clayton. Kaitlin Ryder followed up with a single that knocked in Hope Moreno and Sargent. Erica Chasco doubled - her first in a UTEP uniform, to keep the inning going and advancing Ryder to third base with no outs. But a fielder's choice, a pop out and a ground out ended the rally.
Everett sealed the deal with her second jack of the contest, a grand slam during the bottom sixth.
Sargent hit a solo home run during the fourth inning over center field to give her squad a 2-1 lead. It was her first long ball since Feb. 7 against UC Santa Barbara in Tempe, Ariz.
Ashley Eldridge, Clayton and Ryder each recorded two hits, while Sargent had a career-best three hits. The Miners registered 12 hits in the game.
UTEP will take on Bryant University on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. MT, followed by a game versus Colorado State at 1 p.m. on day two of the Wildcat Invitational.
