TEMPE, Ariz. - The UTEP softball team lost both games, first falling to Virginia, 14-5 (five innings), following a loss to San Diego, 7-6, at the Kajikawa Classic on Friday afternoon.

Virginia 14, UTEP 5 (five innings)

The Cavaliers (1-2) jumped on the Miners with six runs in the second inning and five during the third. Tahla Wade went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, Courtney Clayton knocked in a run on a fielders' choice and Ashley Eldridge tallied an RBI. Kawehiokalani Netane had two hits with two runs scored.

San Diego 7, UTEP 6

The Toreros (1-0) scored five runs in the first inning, but the Miners (0-2) fought back and tacked on four runs during the seventh inning to get within one run. Down 7-0 in top of the sixth inning, Wade and Clayton scored runs on wild pitches. The following inning, Summer Palipti connected on a two-run home run over left field, followed by a Clayton RBI, while Kiki Pepi scored on an error. But it wasn't enough as pitcher Grace Hernandez was able to force a double play to end the game.

UTEP will continue the weekend when it faces Portland State (11:30 a.m. MT) and UC Santa Barbara (8:30 p.m.) on Saturday.

Portland State and UC Santa Barbara both open its respective seasons tonight at the Kajikawa Classic. UC Santa Barbara finished 34-20 in 2014, while Portland State won eight games last season.
