BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UTEP softball team fell to No. 25 UAB in a pair of games, 7-2 and 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers (20-5, 5-0 Conference USA) has won a school-record 14 consecutive games, while halting the Miners' (8-21, 3-2 C-USA) five-game winning streak.
UTEP 2, UAB 7
Cara Goodwin (9-0) pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing only two hits, while Sara Beth Williamson put the game away with a three-run home run down the left field line in the sixth to lift the Blazers.
UAB scored a pair of runs during the first two frames, and two more in the third. Ashley Johnson and Anna Theriot each tallied an RBI during the third inning.
The Miners were able to get runs on the board as Ashley Eldridge hit her fourth long ball of 2015, a two-run shot in the seventh. Pepi followed by drawing a walk, but Goodwin forced three consecutive outs to win game one.
UTEP 2, UAB 3
With the score 2-0 in favor of the Miners, the Blazers scored all three of their runs during the fifth inning. All the runs were scored with two outs.
Danielle Pearson got her squad on the board first with a single to left center in the second, plating Courtney Clayton. UTEP took a 2-0 lead when Clayton singled in Kiki Pepi in the next frame.
Kaitlin Fifield cruised up until that three-run fifth. With two outs, JoJo Fallen doubled to left field, scoring Caitlin Attfield and Hayley Davis to tie game. Williamson gave her squad the one-run lead on a single to center, plating Fallen.
Fifield, after allowing a single in the first, didn't allow another hit until the fifth. Fifield went six solid innings, striking out six and only walking two.
The Miners threatened in the sixth. With one out, Kaitlin Ryder walked, followed by a Pearson double. But Blazers' hurler Madison Hir recorded a strikeout and forced a ground ball to end the rally.
Pepi went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Pearson finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Jade Rodriguez and Taylor Sargent also added a hit each.
