Final Stats
UTEP 0, UAB 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - No. 25 UAB completed a sweep of UTEP after a 2-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at UAB Softball Field.
The Blazers (21-5, 6-0 Conference USA) have won 15 consecutive games, extending their school record. The Miners fall to 8-22 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Kaitlin Fifield (4-7) pitched another solid game, going 6.0 innings, with only one earned run, two strikeouts and zero walks. But UAB hurler Cara Goodwin (10-0) defeated the Miners for a second day in a row, throwing a complete game, walking one, allowing only three hits and striking out nine.
Heather Pearson scored UAB's first run on a wild scenario during the second frame. Ashley Johnson was hit by a pitch to lead off, followed by a Pearson bunt single. Hayley Davis recorded a sac-bunt to advance the runners. The chaos ensued during the Amy Dennis' at bat; Dennis reached on a fielder's choice as Johnson was thrown out at home. The play continued when Dennis took second, avoiding the tag out from the throw at home. Pearson took advantage of a bad throw back to home plate that went by the pitcher's circle and the batter's box.
The Blazers went up 2-0 on a Sara Beth Williamson RBI single that plated Caitlin Attfield in the third inning.
The Miners started a rally in the seventh when Kawehiokalani Netane singled on a rocket down the left line with one out. Eldridge followed with a single to shallow center. Netane was out at third on a Taylor Sargent at bat, in which Sargent was called out at first - ending the game. But after UTEP head coach Tobin Echo-Hawk went to discuss the play with the umpires, it was determined that Sargent reached first on a fielder's choice before being tagged. Danielle Pearson flied out into foul territory to end the game.
