UTEP TO OPEN TWO-GAME ROAD TRIP AT MARSHALL THURSDAY
UTEP (14-9, 5-5 C-USA) will play the first of two straight on the road with a game at Marshall (7-17, 1-10 C-USA) at 4 p.m. MST/6 p.m. EST Thursday. The Miners continued their trend of alternating wins and losses in C-USA play after being edged, 65-62, by LA Tech on Feb. 10 while the Thundering Herd suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, 69-62, vs. league-leading UAB on Feb. 10. Marshall is 6-9 at home (1-5 C-USA contests) while UTEP stands 5-5 (3-2 C-USA) on the road this season. The Miners will wrap up the week by playing at Old Dominion at 12 p.m. MST/2 p.m. EST Saturday. Brandon Cohn will have the call on 600 ESPN El Paso for both contests. The tilts will also be streamed live on CUSA.tv (subscription required). GAME FORMAT
For the third straight season, NCAA women's basketball games will be played in four 10-minute quarters. Teams reach the bonus and shoot two free throws on the fifth team foul in each quarter. In the four-quarter format, team fouls reset to zero at the start of each quarter. Teams have four timeouts (three 30s, one 60), three which carry over to the second half. They will be able to advance the ball to the frontcourt after a timeout with less than 59.9 seconds in 4Q. There are seven media timeouts (four under five minutes in quarter/first called), two intermission media timeouts (after first and third quarters) and the first team-called timeout during the second half. Bands or amplified music may play during any dead ball.

INSIDE THE SERIES
UTEP leads the series, 8-6, with all of the meetings coming since both programs joined Conference USA for the 2005-06 season. The Miners are 2-4 against the Thundering Herd when playing in Huntington. They have dropped their past four visits (2009-10, 2010-11, 2012-13 and 2015-16) to Marshall and are in search of their first road victory in the series since 2007-08. Last year UTEP downed Marshall, 84-74, in El Paso on Jan. 28, 2017.
 
HE SAID IT (COACH BAKER ON MARSHALL)
"Marshall is a strange team because their record isn't anything great but if you really study their last four to five games they've been in every game with a chance to win. It says a lot about our conference because there's so much parity but it also says a team like Marshall can beat you if you're not ready to play. Going on this road trip, going to Marshall and going to Old Dominion is going to be a challenge no matter what. But if there's one thing I know about our team, we are road tested. We've been there, done that so hopefully we'll play well on the road this week."
 
GETTING TO KNOW MARSHALL
Marshall was saddled with a 3-7 start to the season before recovering to claim its final three non-conference contests to carry a mark of 6-7 into Conference USA play. The Thundering Herd have stumbled to a record of 1-10 in league action, including dropping their past four contests. Four of the 10 setbacks in C-USA action have been by single digits, including a hard-fought 69-62 loss to league-leading UAB last time out on Feb. 10. Shayna Gore (19.4 ppg-2nd C-USA/38th NCAA) and Talequia Hamilton (14.6 ppg-11th C-USA) pace the attack. Hamilton also leads the team in rebounding (7.1 rpg-13th C-USA) and blocks (1.6 bpg-3rd C-USA) while Gore does so for steals (1.5 spg), free-throw percentage (.838-1st C-USA/52nd NCAA), 3-point percentage (.410-8th C-USA/45th NCAA), 3-pointers made (75-2nd C-USA/24th NCAA), 3-pointers attempted (183-2nd C-USA/40th NCAA) and 3-pointers per game (3.1-2nd C-USA/19th NCAA). Hamilton is also among C-USA leaders for offensive rebounds per game (2.5-14th), field-goal percentage (.466-14th) and defensive rebounds per game (4.6-15th) . Kristen Mayo is dishing out a team-best 2.9 assists per game. Marshall is in the top five of C-USA team rankings for 3-pointers attempted (554-1st), 3-pointers made (184-3rd), 3-pointers per game (7.7-3rd), assists per game (14.3-4th), fewest turnovers per game (15.3-4th), free-throw percentage (72.7-5th), scoring offense (66.7-5th) and steals per game (8.4-5th). Nationally it has top-100 NCAA team rankings for 3-pointers attempted (51st), 3-pointers made (55th), 3-pointers per game (59th) and free-throw percentage (84th). Notable university alumni include Hal Greer (NBA Hall of Fame Member) and Jim Thornton (Wheel of Fortune Announcer).
 
LAST MEETING WITH MARSHALL (at UTEP 84, Marshall 74 (1/28/17)
All five starters reached double figures in scoring and UTEP used a huge second quarter to power past Marshall, 84-74, at the Don Haskins Center on Jan. 28, 2017. The Thundering Herd led 17-12 after 10 minutes of action but the Miners had a +20 differential (30-10) in the second quarter to cruise into the locker room armed with a 42-27 advantage. The cushion swelled to as many as 21 (56-35, 4:40 3Q) and the visitors never truly threatened the rest of way. Sparkle Taylor (25 points, four assists), Tamara Seda (15 points, 12 rebounds), Zuzanna Puc (12 points, 11 rebounds), Katarina Zec (then career-high tying 11 points, career-high five assists) and Lulu McKinney (10 points, six assists) keyed the charge for the Miners. UTEP shot 40.8 percent (29-71) from the floor, won the boards (46-45) and converted 19 Marshall turnovers into 28 points to secure a big bounce-back win. The Miners racked up 23 assists on the 29 made field goals while also committing only 13 turnovers. Shayna Gore tallied a game-high 26 points to pace the Herd, but no other Herd player had more than 11 points.
 
GOING BACK IN TIME (LA Tech 65, at UTEP 62  (2/10/18)
Tamara Seda poured in 23 points while Katarina Zec (15 points) and Zuzanna Puc (13 points) also hit double figures in scoring but visiting LA Tech snuck past UTEP, 65-62, at the Don Haskins Center on Feb. 10. The Miners led by one (33-32) at the half but the Lady Techsters opened up the second half on a 14-2 run to surge out by 11 (46-35) with 7:03 to play in the period. As it has done all year long, UTEP regrouped and attempted to mount a rally.  It wrapped a 7-0 run around the third and fourth-quarter break to get within three with 9:01 remaining in regulation. The Miners cut it to two on a pair of occasions but never could climb all the way back. A desperation off-balanced 3-point shot from Puc hit the side of the rim as time expired, allowing LA Tech to hold on for the win. UTEP shot a better percentage (46.2-42.6) than LA Tech, hit more overall field goals (24-23) and held a slight advantage on the boards (32-31) but the Lady Techsters nailed 8-18 from distance compared to the Miners' 2-11 to make up for those areas. The Miners had big games from Seda, Zec and Puc but no one else on the squad scored more than six points. Faith Cook contributed through her passing with a season-high tying six assists. LA Tech was paced by a double-double from Alexus Malone (21 points, 11 rebounds) while Kierra Anthony (15 points) and Taylor Stahly (10 points) chipped in as well.
 
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES
UTEP is 14-9 (5-5 in C-USA, 9-4 in non-conference play), which surpasses last season's overall victory total (8-23, 5-13 C-USA) by six wins while matching the number of league victories. UTEP is 5-5 on the road after going
1-9 in hostile territory last year. The Miners have enjoyed three different winning streaks of at least two contests, including peeling off four consecutive triumphs to christen the campaign. Last year's squad only managed win back-to-back games once. The difference in play extends beyond wins and losses, especially with 3-point shooting and scoring defense. The chart below compares and contrasts the average stats by this year's Miners vs. the 2016-17 squad through 23 contests played. Bold indicates the statistical advantage between the two seasons.

TURN IT AROUND
Last season UTEP won 10 games or less (8-23) for the 17th time in program history, and traditionally that has had put a damper on the ensuing campaign. Thirteen of the previous 16 times the Miners entered a year on the heels of a season with 10 or fewer victories they went on to experience a losing campaign. This year's team appears poised to buck that trend, as it sports a 14-9 record. Such a turnaround previously occurred in 2003-04 (16-13 after finishing 10-19), 1988-89 (16-14 after going 8-19) and 1976-77 (13-12 after concluding 6-11).
 
PROGRESS IN CONFERENCE
A year after finishing 5-13 in Conference USA play, the Miners stand 5-5 in the now 16-contest C-USA slate. With its next victory, UTEP would surpass its league victory total from last season.

QUICK RUNDOWN ON THE SEASON
UTEP jumped out to a 4-0 start on the year for the ninth time in program history and stood at 5-1 following its season-opening six game homestand. After dropping their next two contests, both on the road, the Orange and Blue rallied four of the next five to close non-conference play at 9-4 while also topping last season's overall win total (8-23) in the process. The Miners have alternated wins and losses since starting Conference USA play, including a narrow 65-62 setback vs. LA Tech last time out on Feb. 10. Overall UTEP stands 14-9 on the season, including 5-5 in C-USA action.
 
BAKER HAS MADE HISTORY
Six games remain in the 2017-18 regular season, but Kevin Baker already has secured the most wins by a first-year UTEP head coach in program history. He has piloted the Miners to a record of 14-9 to eclipse the prior standard of 11 that was shared by Carol Ammermann (11-5, 1974-75) and Janet Wood (11-16, 1979-80). Ammermann is responsible for the lone winning record by a first-year Miner head coach in school history, something that Baker is hoping to change. Prior to Baker's arrival the seven head coaches at UTEP went a combined 54-120 (8-17 average record) in their first year at the helm of the program.
 
GETTING IT DONE IN CLOSE WINS
UTEP is 5-2 this year in games decided by five points or less, tying for the most such victories in a season in program history. The Miners also won five games with a differential of five or less in 2011-12 (5-3), 2010-11 (5-6), 2004-05 (5-4) and 1978-79 (5-3). This season the Miners have a pair of one-point victories (77-76-at FIU-1/5/18 and 92-91 at Cal State Fullerton-12/29/17), a two-point win (50-48, at North Texas-1/28/18), a triumph by three (64-61 vs. Arkansas-11/24/17) and a five-point win (75-70, Florida Atlantic-1/18/18). The two losses in the situation have both been by three points (62-65, LA Tech-2/10/18 and at 73-76, at Arkansas State-12/5/18).
 
TALKING ONE-POINT WINS
UTEP has secured two wins by one point this season. It's the first time since 1988-89 (three one-point victories) and the second occasion overall that the Miners have multiple such wins in a year.
 
COMEBACK CREW
This year's team is the first in program history to erase deficits of at least 15 points in multiples contests. The Miners rallied back to win against both Charlotte (67-58, 1/11/18) and Florida Atlantic (75-70, 1/18/18) after trailing by 15 points in each of those games. The 15-point comebacks tie as the fifth biggest in program history. They also have overcome a pair of eight-point deficits (CSU Bakersfield, 67-56, 11/11/17 & HBU, 69-62, 12/2/17) and a nine-point rally (at FIU, 77-76, 1/5/18).
 
CLEANING UP THE GLASS
UTEP sports a +7.3 rebounding margin (39.7-32.4) on the season to pace C-USA and rate 32nd nationally. Helping that figure are 28.0 defensive rebounds per contest which ties for second in the league. The 39.7 rebounds per game places second in C-USA and 82nd in the nation. Senior Tamara Seda has been the top performer at 9.4 rpg, which is third in the league and 52nd in the country. She grabs 3.8 offensive rebounds per game to rank second in C-USA and 29th nationally while her 5.6 defensive boards per contest rates eighth in the league.
 
WIN THE BOARDS
The Miners have won the boards in 18 games (13-5) this season, including the first 13 contests of the campaign. That marked the longest such streak to start a year since at least 1982-83 (prior records incomplete).
 
BOX OUT
UTEP has done an excellent job of boxing out this season. The Miners have secured a Conference USA-leading 71.8 percent of the possible defensive rebounds. UTEP has grabbed the defensive rebound 645 times out of a possible 898 boards. The Miners' 28.0 defensive rebounds per game is second in the league
 
MORE ON THE MARGIN ON THE GLASS
Aiding UTEP's numbers in the rebounding department was back-to-back games in which it had a +20 advantage earlier this year. The Miners were +24 (51-27) against Arkansas on Nov. 24 and +21 (46-25) vs. Texas Southern on Nov. 25. It was the first time UTEP had won the rebounding battle by 20+ boards in back-to-back games since the 2011-12 season. That year UTEP achieved the feat in wins against Texas State on Dec. 31, 2011 (50-24, +26) and SMU on Jan. 5, 2012, (52-28, +24).
 
SOLID SHOOTING
UTEP enters the match-up at Marshall having drilled 42.7 percent (526-1232) from the floor to rate fourth in C-USA and 82nd nationally. The Miners have hit better than 50 percent from the floor in five contests, including in each of the first three games of the season for the first time since at least 1982-83 (prior records incomplete).
 
BOMBS AWAY
UTEP stands at 33.0 percent (115-349) from 3-point range this season. The Miners have connected on at least 40 percent from distance nine times (8-1) overall on the season. UTEP has a pair of games that it sunk 10+ treys; it was 12-22 at NM State and 10-21 against HBU on Dec. 2. The 12 makes at NM State tied for sixth on the school's single-game records.
 
GETTING TO THE LINE
The Miners have done an outstanding job of getting to the charity stripe and taking advantage once there. In fact UTEP has made more free throws than its foes have attempted. The Orange and Blue are 317-437 (72.5 percent) at the free-throw line in 2017-18 while the opposition stands 206-312 (66.0 percent). Overall it works out to 13.8 free throws made per game for UTEP to 9.0 for its opponents. Helping that figure was nailing a school-record 42 free throws on 50 attempts (third most at school) vs. East Carolina on Dec. 17. The effort has the Miners fifth in the league and 105th in the country for free throws made and sixth in C-USA and 139th nationally for free throws attempted. UTEP's free-throw percentage of 72.5 is sixth in C-USA and 90th in the country.
 
GETTING DEFENSIVE
UTEP is holding foes to 63.6 points per game on 38.9 percent (537-1382) shooting, including 32.6 percent (182-559) on 3-point shots. Helping those numbers has been keeping 13 opponents to 62 or fewer points, including an opponent season-low 33 points by Samford on Dec. 21.
 
KEEPING THE FOULS TO A MINIMUM
One thing that UTEP has done well in 2017-18 has been limiting its fouls. The Miners have committed 15 or fewer fouls in 14 contests. Overall UTEP has been tagged with 15.1 personal fouls per game to rank second in C-USA and 45th in the nation.
 
MORE ON THE DEFENSE
UTEP has kept 14 foes to below 40.0 percent from the floor, including holding the first three opponents on the year to under 33 percent for the first time since 1982-83 (prior records incomplete). The best effort came against Samford when it shot 20.8 percent on Dec. 21. It marked the sixth-best defensive field-goal percentage in program history. In terms of guarding the 3-point shot, 14 opponents have been held to below 33.3 percent from distance. The Miners turned in a historic performance at UC Riverside when the Highlanders finished 0-16 from distance on Dec. 30. It marked the most 3-point attempts by an opponent without a make since the shot was added in women's college hoops for the 1987-88 campaign. UTSA also failed to hit a 3-pointer on Feb. 4; it missed all nine attempts.
 
PLENTY OF PLAYING TIME TO GO AROUND
The Miners have only nine active players on the roster, meaning that there's plenty of playing time to go around. Head coach Kevin Baker has done a good job of spreading the minutes with eight different Miners (Najala Howell-31.8, Tamara Seda-31.7, Katarina Zec-31.3, Faith Cook-29.9, Jordan Alexander-26.8, Zuzanna Puc-20.4, Roeshonda Patterson-16.7 and Jordan Jenkins-13.9 logging at least 10 minutes per contest. That leaves Rachel Tapps (3.3) as the lone player on the squad at below 10.0 mpg.
 
WHAT'S TRENDING WITH THE TEAM
Made 15 turnovers or less in five of the past six contests after averaging 19.3 giveaways the first 17 games ... after hitting six 3-pointers in three straight contests, UTEP was 2-11 from distance vs. LA Tech on Feb. 10 ... hit a season-low 42.1 percent (8-19) from the free-throw line vs. UAB on Feb. 2 but has gone 22-29 (75.9 percent) in the two games since ... averaged 46 points on 33.3 percent (31-93) shooting in the roadswing to Rice (1/26/18) and North Texas (1/28/18) but has put up 64.0 ppg while hitting 43.5 percent (74-170) in the past three contests ...  have limited four of the past five opponents to single digits for offensive rebounds; that happened five times over the initial 18 tilts ... forced at least 17 turnovers in the first four C-USA contests but the past six league foes all have made 14 or less giveaways.
 
SEDA DOMINATING DOWN LOW
Senior Tamara Seda has been a force to be reckoned with in 2017-18. She paces the team and is among the C-USA and national leaders for scoring (14.8 ppg-9th/231st), double-doubles (11-2nd/33rd), rebounding (9.4 rpg-3rd/52nd),field-goal percentage (53.0-4th/53rd), free throws attempted (133-3rd/61st), free throws made (91-3rd/100th) and offensive rebounds per game (3.8-2nd/29th). She also tops the team in defensive rebounds per contest (5.6-8th C-USA). Seda has reached double figures in scoring in a team-high 19 contests, including six games with 20+ points (career-high 30-at Cal State Fullerton-12/29/17, 23-LA Tech-2/10/18, 21-at UC Riverside-12/30/17, 20-Florida Atlantic-1/18/18, 20-Arkansas-11/24/17 and 20-CSU Bakersfield-11/11/17). She also has also shot at least 50.0 percent from the floor in 12 tilts.
 
HOWELL'S ALL-AROUND EFFORT
Junior Najala Howell leads the Miners in playing time (31.8 mpg), 3-pointers made (32), attempted (81) and percentage (39.5). She is second on the team in scoring (12.7 ppg), free throws made (76), free throws attempted (91) and free-throw percentage (83.5) and third in assists (2.0), and rebounding (6.1 rpg). She has reached double figures for scoring in 17 games this year, which trails only Tamara Seda (19).  Included in those contests are four 20-point efforts (23-at UTSA-2/4/18, 23-at UCR-12/30/17, 22-Florida Atlantic-1/18/18 and 21-at FIU-1/5/18). She is 58th in the nation for free-throw percentage.
 
COMING ALIVE FROM 3-POINT LAND
Najala Howell leads the team in 3-pointers made (32), attempted (81) and percentage (39.5). Helping that cause was sinking a career-high five triples (on five attempts) in the win at UC Riverside on Dec. 30. Last year she was 19-54 (35.2 percent) from distance.
 
ALEXANDER GETTING AFTER IT
Junior Jordan Alexander, one of two newcomers on this year's squad, has established herself as a difference maker. She is second on the team in rebounding (6.4) and offensive rebounds (37), third in free throws made (47) and attempted (68) and fifth in minutes per game (26.8 mpg) and scoring (7.5). She has five double-digit scoring efforts, including a career-high 18 points vs. UAB (2/2/18). Alexander has also secured 10+ boards in three contests, including a personal-best 13 at North Texas (1/28/18).
 
ZEC STEPPING HER GAME UP
Sophomore Katarina Zec is second on the team in assists (2.0) and third in scoring (9.7 ppg). She has reached double figures in scoring in 12 games, which doubles her total (six) of such contests from her freshman season. She has a pair of 20+ point efforts (career-high 22-at NM State-12/10/17 and 21-at Cal State Fullerton-12/29/17), both of which have come on the road. She was locked in from distance against the Aggies, making a school-record tying seven triples out of 10 attempts. Overall she has sunk 28-81 (34.6 percent) from home-run range. She is second on the squad for 3-point percentage and 3-pointers made while sharing the lead for 3-pointers attempted.
 
COOK MAKING IMPROVEMENT TOO
Faith Cook is accounting for 5.3 ppg after putting up 1.9 ppg a year ago. She also paces the team in assists (3.0 apg), which tops her effort (1.7 apg) from a year ago as well. An area of improvement has been her shooting from distance. After going 19.3 percent (11-57) from 3-point range as a freshman, she has moved to 33.3 percent (23-69) from beyond-the-arc, giving her more than double the amount of triples made during the 2016-17 season. She is third on the squad in 3-pointers made (23), 3-point percentage (34.3) and 3-point attempts (69). She has a trio of double-digit scoring efforts, including a career-high 16 points vs. East Carolina on Dec. 17.
 
PATTERSON AIDING OFF THE PINE
Sophomore Roeshonda Patterson has grown in her role off the bench for the Miners in 2017-18. She is chipping in 4.7 ppg to place second among the reserves and rank seventh on the squad overall. She has hit 36.6 percent (37-101) from the floor, including a readout of 28.8 percent (17-59) on triples. It is an improvement from a year ago when she chipped in 2.3 ppg on 22.5 percent shooting (18-80), including 22.8 percent (13-57) on 3 pointers.
 
PUC PACING THE RESERVES
Sophomore Zuzanna Puc has provided a boost from the bench by pacing the reserves in scoring (8.1 ppg), rebounding (4.5 rpg) and playing time (20.4 mpg). Her 51.8 percent (73-141) from the floor is second on the team while she checks in fourth for rebounding and scoring. She has hit double figures in scoring in eight contests including notching her first double-double of the year (season-high 18 points, 11 rebounds) at FIU on Jan. 5. She had six double-digit contests as a freshman.
 
JENKINS MAKING AN IMPACT WITH PASSING
Freshman Jordan Jenkins ranks leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.1) while ranking fourth on the squad in assists (1.7 apg). In terms of her own offense 10 of her 14 field goals made have come on 3-point shots. Helping that was scoring a career-high seven points on 2-4 shooting, including 2-2 at the free-throw line, in a personal-best 27 minutes at Tulane on Dec. 22. She also has chipped in six points in two contests (Florida Atlantic-1/18/18 and Houston Baptist-12/2/17).
 
WHAT'S TRENDING WITH INDIVIDUALS
Jordan Jenkins is 4-6 (66.7 percent) from distance in C-USA play after going 6-23 (26.1 percent) in non-conference action ... Roeshonda Patterson was 1-1 from distance against LA Tech (2/10/18); she had gone 1-22 on 3-point shots in the eight previous contests ... after four straight tilts with two turnovers, Patterson has made one giveaway or less in the past six contests ... she dished out three assists vs. LA Tech to equal her total of helpers from the five previous tilts ...  Jordan Alexander  is 3-10 (30.0 percent) from distance the past five tilts; she was 2-14 (14.3 percent) to start the season ... due to foul trouble, Alexander played 17 minutes vs. LA Tech; she had logged 30+ minutes in the three previous contests ... STAUNCH FIRST-QUARTER DEFENSE
Three times this year the Miners have held opponents to five points or less in the first quarter of play, including keeping Samford to four opening-quarter points on Dec. 21. The Miners previously achieved the feat against Arkansas on Nov. 24 (three points) and CSU Bakersfield (five points) on Nov. 11. The three points conceded vs. Arkansas ties the program standard for fewest points allowed in a frame. 
 
IN THE NCAA RANKINGS
The Miners have top-100 NCAA team rankings for rebound margin (+7.3-32nd), fewest personal fouls per game (15.1-45th), rebounds per game (39.7-82nd), field-goal percentage (42.7-82nd) and free-throw percentage (72.5-90th). UTEP is in the bottom 300 for forcing turnovers (13.3-311th), turnover margin (-4.6-324th), blocks per game (1.5-334th) and steals per game (4.8-338th). Individually Tamara Seda is 29th in offensive rebounds per game (3.8), 33rd for double-doubles (11), 52nd for rebounds per game (9.4), 53rd in field-goal percentage (53.0), 61st in free throw attempts (133), 100th for free throws made (91) and 231st in scoring (14.8 ppg). Najala Howell is 58th in free-throw percentage (83.5).
 
GETTING TO KNOW THE 2017-18 MINERS
UTEP returned eight letter winners (Faith Cook, Jakeira Ford, Najala Howell, Roeshonda Patterson, Zuzanna Puc, Tamara Seda, Rachel Tapps and Katarina Zec) from last year's squad (8-23, 5-11 Conference USA) but Ford is no longer on the squad. Puc, Seda and Zec all started for UTEP in 2016-17. The Miners also added four newcomers (Jordan Alexander, Ariona Gill, Jordan Jenkins and Neidy Ocuane) but Gill and Ocuane are slated to take a redshirt year in 2017-18. The squad is under the direction of first-year head coach Kevin Baker, who is assisted by first-year assistants Nicole Dunson, Michael Madrid and Lori Morris.
 
ROSTER BREAKDOWN
Head coach Kevin Baker inherited a young team, with 55.6% of the active roster (5-of-9) comprised of sophomores (Faith Cook, Roeshonda Patterson, Zuzanna Puc, Rachel Tapps and Katarina Zec). The Miners have just three upperclassmen, in the form of one senior (Tamara Seda) to go along with returning junior Najala Howell and junior-college transfer Jordan Alexander. Freshman Jordan Jenkins rounded out the active roster. Two other newcomers (junior-college transfers Ariona Gill and Neidy Ocuane) are sitting out the 2017-18 season as redshirts.
 
NEW FACES
The Miners have four newcomers in 2017-18, though two of the additions (junior Ariona Gill, 5-11, G/F, San Jacinto College) and junior Neidy Ocuane (5-5, G, Seward County CC) are redshirting. Junior Jordan Alexander (5-11, F, Trinity Valley CC) and freshman Jordan Jenkins (5-3, G, Buffalo HS) have both contributed. Last year Alexander helped TVCC qualify for its 10th straight trip to the national tournament and finish with an overall record of 30-6. She put up 6.5 points per game while also grabbing 2.5 rebounds per game. Jenkins averaged 20 points, eight steals, seven assists and six rebounds to help her squad earn runner-up honors in Texas 2017 in the UIL 3A playoffs. Ocuane paced her team in assists per game (4.7) and steals per game (2.4) while ranking fourth in scoring (11.2). Her efforts helped it win the program's first conference title in eight years.
 
THE BAKER FILE
Kevin Baker was appointed as the eighth head coach in UTEP women's basketball history on Monday, April 24, 2017. He has a unique background which has seen him rise through the coaching ranks from high school level, to NCAA Division III, then NCAA Division II and now his NCAA Division I position at UTEP. Throughout his ascent, though, he has consistently found a way to win. He is 358-140 overall in his 16th year as a head coach, including 136-39 in his sixth season as a college head coach. He has set school records for wins at every stop of his career, and has taken every school to the playoffs with a total of five district championships. He is an eight-time Coach of the Year. In his stops most recently prior to UTEP, Baker's teams captured back-to-back conference championships at UT-Tyler and Angelo State. Baker has led both a Division II (Angelo State) and Division III (UT-Tyler) school to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
 
EXPERIENCED STAFF
While head coach Kevin Baker and his three assistants (Nicole Dunson, Michael Madrid and Lori Morris) are in their first year at UTEP, they brought plenty of coaching experience to the Sun City. The quartet entered the 2017-18 season with a combined 93 years of coaching experience (Morris-37 years, Baker-23 years, Madrid-22 years and Dunson-11 years)
 
BASIC FACTS ON THE PROGRAM
UTEP is 561-657 in its 44th season as a women's basketball program, including 14-9 in 2017-18. The Miners have made four postseason bids (2016,-WNIT quarterfinals; 2014-WNIT runner-up, 2012-NCAA first round and 2008-NCAA second round), sporting a combined record of 9-4 (8-2 WNIT, 1-2 NCAA). UTEP has claimed four league championships (2016 C-USA regular season, 2012 C-USA regular season and conference tournament and 2008 C-USA regular season). It has a 1-1 record all time in league tournament title games, winning the title in 2012 and falling in 2008. There have been six 20+ win seasons (all since 2006-07), including four of the past six years. UTEP has cracked the top-25 poll in two seasons (2015-16, 2007-08), including being ranked in the final six weeks in '07-08, while receiving votes in eight campaigns total ('15-16, '13-14, '12-13, '11-12, '08-09, '07-08 and '06-07). The Miners have been mentioned in the AP Preseason Poll four times, including garnering three points in 2016-17. In 2008 UTEP became the first C-USA women's team to finish undefeated in league play (16-0) while claiming the program's initial league title in 2008. The Miners finished 15-1 in C-USA in 2012 in addition to also winning the program's first conference tournament championship. UTEP owns the C-USA single-season record for winning streak at 23, which was set in 2007-08. The University of Texas at El Paso (founded in 1914) recently enjoyed its centennial celebration. Notable alumni include former ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Sam Donaldson, well-respected NFL referee Ed Hochuli, former NASA astronaut Danny Olivas engineer & Dennis Poon, who designed Taipei 101 & some of the tallest buildings in the world.
 
THIRD-BEST IN TEXAS SINCE 2006-07
The Miners have the third-highest winning percentage among all DI programs in Texas since 2006-07. Baylor (372-52, 87.7%), and Texas A&M (302-105, 74.2%) lead the way followed by UTEP (243-129, 65.3%). Texas (254-137, 65.0%-4th), Lamar (227-140, 61.9%-5th), Stephen F. Austin (221-143, 60.7%-6th), TCU (215-159, 57.5%-7th), SMU (196-171, 53.4%-8th), Prairie View A&M (196-176, 52.7%-9th) and Texas Tech (185-190, 49.3%-10th) round out the top 10.
 
SPECIAL RUN
The Miners are 143-75 since the start of the 2011-12 season, with 84 double-digit victories in that time frame. UTEP has played postseason basketball in three of the past six seasons, making two deep runs in the WNIT (2014 runner-up, 2016 quarterfinals) and earning the C-USA automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Tournament (lost, first round). It is has enjoyed 15 separate winning streaks of at least three games during that time frame.
 
HOME SWEET HOME
UTEP has an all-time home record of 358-218, including standing 7-4 this year. The Miners have amassed a record of 159-44 at home since 2006-07, including 92-27 since 2011-12. Aiding that 92-27 record over the past six years was a school-record (winning percentage) 19-1 home mark in 2015-16. UTEP has been particularly strong in non-conference play, sporting a record of 80-12 at home in the situation since 2006-07.
 
ALL ABOUT THE FANS
The Miners received tremendous support to help propel them to a pair of deep runs in the WNIT (2014 runner-up honors, 2016 quarterfinals) in the past four years. UTEP averaged 7,773 fans per game during the 10 WNIT contests (8-2 record) in El Paso. Aiding those numbers were back-to-back sellouts, the first in program history, in the semifinals and finals of the 2014 WNIT. The Miners have ranked in the top-50 nationally for attendance in three of the past six years. UTEP placed 28th in 2013-14 (3,793 avg.), 42nd in 2012-13 (2,708 avg.) and 46th in 2011-12 (2,639 avg.). The Miners are 28-10 when playing in front of 4,000+ fans since 2001-02. They are 25-3 in the situation at the Don Haskins Center and 3-7 when doing so on the road.
 
TRAVEL TIME
UTEP is 144-360 all time on the road, including a mark of 5-5 this year. It is four more wins than last season's team (1-9 road record).When playing at a neutral site the Miners stand 59-78, including 2-0 this year. Since the start of the 2006-07 season UTEP is 60-66 on the road, including 36-35 since 2011-12. 
 
LONG AND TAXING TIME ON THE ROAD
After a season-opening six-game homestand (5-1), the Miners went the next five-and-a-half weeks (Dec. 5-Jan. 7) without a home contest. UTEP went 5-4 during the nine-game stretch (seven road, two neutral) between home contests. It marked the longest such stretch since the 1987-88 season (Nov. 29-Jan. 4), when there was a 12-game span between home tilts.

Redshirt-senior Tamara Seda ranks tied for second at UTEP for double-doubles (22), sixth in blocked shots (84), seventh for rebounds (637), 10th in rebounding average (7.2), 16th for free throws attempted (316), 18th in free throws made (200), tied 21st in games started (53), 23rd for minutes played (2,060),  24th for field goals made (294), 25th in scoring (788), tied 31st for individual wins (51) and 34th in games played (88). Zuzanna Puc is tied 17th in blocked shots (33). Najala Howell is 23rd for 3-pointers made (53), 28th in 3-pointers attempted (150), tied 31st for individual wins (51), 40th in games played (78) and 43rd for points (572).
 
2016-17 IN REVIEW
UTEP went through a rebuilding year in 2016-17, finishing with a record of 8-23, including 5-13 in Conference USA play, before bowing out in the first round of the 2017 C-USA Championships. The youth-laden Miners lost all five starters from the 2015-16 season and returned only four letter winners from that squad, giving them a new look for the year. UTEP played its most challenging non-conference schedule in program history with a single-season school-record five games against teams from power five conferences. It went 0-5 in those contests while finishing 3-4 vs. non power league programs in non-conference play. Overall UTEP was saddled with a 2-9 start to the year before going 3-3 over the next six games. The Miners then lost a season-long six straight and eight of the next nine before posting back-to-back victories. UTEP dropped its final two games of the regular season and was upended by sixth-seeded Old Dominion in the first round of the C-USA Championships, 80-70.
 
CLIFF NOTES ON THE 2017-18 SEASON
UTEP POWERS PAST UTSA FOR ROAD WIN (UTEP 66, at UTSA 53  (2/4/18)
Najala Howell (career-high tying 23 points, career-high 13 rebounds), Tamara Seda (19 points, 12 rebounds) and Katarina Zec (17 points, four rebounds) all had big days to help lift UTEP past homestanding UTSA, 66-53, on Feb. 4. The Miners led by four (48-44) with six minutes to play in the contest before Howell took over. She ripped off 10 consecutive points to give UTEP its largest lead in the game (58-44) with 3:43 left in regulation and the Roadrunners couldn't get closer than seven the rest of the way. The effort afforded UTEP its first victory in San Antonio in four years. The Miners shot 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor, including nailing 6-16 (37.5 percent) from distance, in addition to crushing UTSA on the boards (47-29). The home side was held to 33.8 percent (23-68) shooting and finished 0-9 from beyond-the-arc. Howell, Seda and Zec accounted for 59 of UTEP's 66 points in the game. Jordan Alexander pitched in two points but did have seven rebounds. UTSA was led by Marie Benson's 20 points.
 
BIG-TIME QUARTER
Najala Howell tied for the second-most points in a quarter in program history by finishing with 14 of her eventual career-high tying 23 in the 66-53 win at UTSA on Feb. 4.
 
UAB PULLS AWAY IN FOURTH QUARTER TO DOWN UTEP (UAB 84, at UTEP 64  (2/2/18)
UTEP went toe-to-toe with Conference-USA leading UAB through three quarters of play before the visitors found another gear in the final frame to pull away for an 84-64 victory at the Don Haskins Center on Feb. 2. UAB, which led 54-52 heading to the final frame, opened up the fourth quarter on a 16-1 run on the way to outscoring the Miners by a count of 30-12 over the final 10 minutes of action. Jordan Alexander tallied a career-high 18 points to pace UTEP. She was joined in double figures in scoring by Tamara Seda (10 points, 10 rebounds), Najala Howell (10 points) and Zuzanna Puc (10 points, nine boards) while Katarina Zec pitched in nine points. The Miners shot 41 percent (25-61) from the floor and finished with 17 assists to only 11 turnovers but they simply didn't have enough firepower to keep pace with the Blazers for the entire contest. UAB finished at 53.4 percent (31-58), including 47.2 percent (17-36) from beyond-the-arc. Aiding those numbers was shooting a ridiculous 84.6 percent (11-13) in the final 10 minutes of action. Rachael Childress powered the attack for the Blazers with 26 points, including going 8-13 from home-run range. Deanna Kuzmanic (19 points) and Trista Magee (14 points) buoyed her efforts.
 
UTEP RIDES DEFENSE AND TIMELY SHOTS TO 50-48 WIN AT NORTH TEXAS (UTEP 50, at North Texas 48  (1/28/18)
UTEP won the boards (34-28) and held North Texas to 35.4 percent (17-48) shooting to grind out a 50-48 road win on Jan. 28. The Miners led for nearly 32 minutes of action, got enough stops down the stretch and hit shots in key moments to secure the hard-fought win against the Mean Green. Katarina Zec tallied 11 points in the game, including nailing the go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:34 left in regulation. The shot put UTEP up, 48-46, while also wiping away the only second-half lead by North Texas. The margin was one (49-48) when Terriell Bradley, who poured in a game-high 22 points, misfired on a driving jumper in the waning seconds. Jordan Alexander, who tallied eight points to go along with a career-high 13 rebounds, secured the board and was fouled. She split the pair with 0.5 seconds left. North Texas called timeout to advance the ball but its in-bound pass hit the rim and time expired. Tamara Seda (13 points), Zec and Najala Howell (10 points, seven rebounds) joined forces with Alexander to provide the bulk of the offense. After shooting 57.9 percent (11-19) in the opening half to surge out to a 34-25 lead at the break, the Miners finished 3-20 (15.0 percent) over the final 20 minutes. UTEP compensated for that by nailing 7-10 at the free-throw line in the half, which put them at 16-22 (72.7 percent) for the contest. Conversely the Mean Green were just 10-18 on charity stripe tosses.
 
WHO NEEDS FIELD GOALS ANYWAY
UTEP made just three field goals (on 20 attempts) in the entire second half and still managed to win 50-48 at North Texas on Jan. 28. It marked the fewest field goals in a half by a Miner team since UTEP also hit three (on 19 tries) in the opening 20 minutes of action at Rice in an eventual 55-50 road setback on Jan. 6, 2005.
 
MORE ALONG THOSE LINES
The Miners also won at North Texas despite not making a 2-point field in the second half. It marked the first time since at least the 1998-99 season (prior records incomplete) that UTEP went an entire half (either first or second) without hitting a 2-point shot.
 
MINERS FALL AT RICE (at Rice 56, UTEP 42 (1/26/18)
UTEP held Rice to its second-lowest scoring output of the season but couldn't generate enough offense in a 56-42 road setback Friday evening. The Owls rode a barrage of 3-pointers (12-27) to fuel their offensive effort against the Miners. At the other end of the court the Orange and Blue connected on 31.5 percent (17-54) from the floor, including 3-13 (23.1 percent) from distance. Rebounding also went in favor of the home side, 37-32. UTEP tried to compensate for that by committing a season-low 10 turnovers and holding a 22-14 advantage for points in the paint but it wasn't enough to make up for the off shooting night. Tamara Seda led the way for the Miners with 13 points, which tied as the most by any player on the court, while Jordan Alexander pitched in nine points. Erica Ogwumike led the way for the Owls with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds). She was joined in double figures by Nicole Iademarco (13 points) and Wendy Knight (11 points).
 
UTEP RALLIES PAST FLORIDA ATLANTIC, 75-70 (at UTEP 75, Florida Atlantic 70 (1/18/18)
Najala Howell (22 points, 11 rebounds) and Tamara Seda (20 points, 10 rebounds) both posted double-doubles, and UTEP rallied from 15 down to knock off Florida Atlantic, 75-70, at the Don Haskins Center on Jan. 18. The Owls made them work for it by nailing 10 triples, including eight in the first half, to lead, 45-30, late in the first half. The deficit was 11 midway through the third quarter before the Miners wrapped a 15-0 run around the quarter break to secure their first lead since the opening minutes of action. It was back-and-forth down the stretch with four lead changes in the final five minutes, including UTEP scoring the final six points of the contest after FAU led 70-69 with 56 seconds left. Katarina Zec joined Howell and Seda in double figures with 13 points and six boards while Jordan Jenkins, Jordan Alexander and Zuzanna Puc each chipped in six points. Roeshonda Patterson made an impact with a career-high seven rebounds and a pair of steals in 14 minutes off the bench. The Miners won the boards, 46-38, while also holding an advantage for points in the paint at 34-22. UTEP connected on 43.5 percent (27-63) while also taking care of business at the charity stripe by going 19-24 (79.2 percent). FAU was held to 35.8 percent (24-67), including 30.3 percent (10-33) from beyond-the-arc. Malia Kency tallied 21 points to lead a quartet of Owls in double figures.
 
MIDDLE TENNESSEE FIGHTS OFF UTEP, 54-45 (Middle Tennessee 54, at UTEP 45 (1/13/18)
Zuzanna Puc came off the bench to score 16 points while Jordan Alexander added 12 but visiting Middle Tennessee rode the hot hand of Anna Jones (30 points) to a 54-45 conquest of UTEP at the Don Haskins Center on Jan. 13. The Blue Raiders led 23-22 with 8:57 to play in the third quarter before they peeled off 15 straight points to put the Miners in a 16-point hole (38-22) with 2:35 to play in the frame. UTEP, as has been the case all year, proved to be a resilient club by cutting that deficit in half (43-37) with 6:43 remaining in regulation. Jones, though, nailed one of her eight triples in the contest to end the 15-5 run and the Orange and Blue could get no closer than seven the rest of the way. UTEP actually shot a better overall field-goal percentage (18-44, 40.9%) than Middle Tennessee (16-46, 34.8%) but the visitors made up for that by drilling 12 triples to UTEP's one and winning the boards (34-28). The Blue Raiders also had a 12-0 advantage for second-chance points. The Miners' two leading scorers (Tamara Seda and Najala Howell) were held to a combined six points, with Middle Tennessee really clamping down on the duo. That led to some opportunities for Puc, who drained 8-11 from the floor to key the charge offensively for UTEP. Alexander also hit double digits in scoring, aided by going 6-9 at the charity stripe, while Faith Cook pitched in seven points and four assists. Ultimately the difference in the game came down to Jones, who had a career day. She entered the game contributing 2.4 points per game and had made 7-39 (17.9 percent) from 3-point range on the season. Jones then proceeded to drill 8-13 from beyond-the-arc and 10-17 overall for the 30-point outburst.
 
UTEP RALLIES PAST CHARLOTTE, 67-58 (at UTEP 67, Charlotte 58 (1/11/18)
Tamara Seda recorded her eight double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) of the year and UTEP used a huge third quarter (23-6) to rally past Charlotte, 67-58, in its Conference USA home opener at the Don Haskins Center Thursday afternoon. The 49ers led the Miners 25-10 with 6:18 to play in the first half but UTEP wrapped a 36-10 run around halftime to surge into the lead (46-35). Charlotte then tried to play catch-up, cutting the deficit to four on a three separate occasions but the Miners were able to counter every challenge. The 15-point comeback ties as the fifth-largest rally in program history. Najala Howell (16 points) and Zuzanna Puc (12 points) joined Seda in Double figures for scoring while Faith Cook added nine points and six assists and Katarina Zec pitched in seven points and four helpers. UTEP enjoyed its highest-scoring second half (44) of the season while also setting campaign highs for steals (11). The Miners connected on 43.4 percent (23-53), won the boards (39-30) and forced 17 Charlotte turnovers that led to 18 points. The 49ers were held to 39.3 percent (22-56) shooting.
 
RALLY TIME
UTEP tied for the fifth-largest comeback in program history by rallying back from a 15-point deficit (25-10, 6:18 second quarter) in an eventual 67-58 win against Charlotte on Thursday. The Miners achieved the feat by wrapping a 36-10 run around halftime to surge into the lead (46-35). The 49ers fought back to get within four on three separate occasions but UTEP had an answer every time.
 
UTEP FALLS SHORT AT FLORIDA ATLANTIC, 72-66 (at Florida Atlantic 72, UTEP 66 (1/7/18)
Tamara Seda tallied 18 points to lead a trio of Miners in double figures but a sluggish start to the contest proved costly in an eventual 72-66 setback at Florida Atlantic on Jan. 7. The Miners dug themselves an early 14-point deficit (18-4, 2:30 first quarter), which forced them to play catch-up with the Owls the rest of the way. UTEP trimmed the deficit to five (31-26) with 1:39 to play the first half but the Owls hit two of their nine 3-pointers in the contest to secure an 11-point (37-26) halftime lead. UTEP managed to get within eight (51-43) heading to the final frame but a strong start to the fourth quarter afforded the Owls a 17-point lead (64-47) with six minutes left. The Miners continued to battle down the stretch and scored the final nine points of the contest as part of a 13-2 run but it was too little too late. UTEP actually shot a higher percentage (24-61, 39.3%) than the Owls (25-67, 37.3%) but the home side compensated for that through hitting five more triples (FAU 9-30; UTEP 3-19) and winning the boards (44-38). Another factor was FAU holding significant advantages in both second-chance points (21-6) and points off turnovers (24-10). Najala Howell (14 points) and Faith Cook (11 points) joined Seda in double figures for scoring while Katarina Zec added nine. Tyana Robinson (19 points) and Danneal Ford (15 points) led the charge for Florida Atlantic, which never trailed in the game.
 
GETTING IT DONE AT THE LINE
UTEP connected on 93.8 percent (15-16) from the charity stripe at Florida Atlantic on Jan. 7. It marked the third-highest percentage in a road contest in program history and seventh regardless of site overall.
 
UTEP WINS C-USA OPENER AT FIU (UTEP 77, at FIU 76 (1/5/18)
Najala Howell poured in 21 points, including the game-winning free throws with 3.5 seconds left, as UTEP gutted out a 77-76 victory at FIU in the Conference USA opener for both squads on Jan. 5. After the two charity stripe tosses by Howell, the Panthers' Kristian Hudson misfired on a triple at the buzzer to clinch the third straight win for the Miners. The victory is even more impressive considering that UTEP played the final 37 minutes of the contest without leading rebounder and scorer, Tamara Seda, who sustained an early injury. It was a back-and-forth affair with 12 ties and 14 lead changes. The Miners led by two at the break before a 13-0 run in the third quarter afforded FIU a nine-point lead (52-45) with 2:45 to play in the frame. UTEP was able to cut the deficit to four heading to the fourth quarter and then completed the comeback by outscoring the Panthers, 24-19, over the final 10 minutes. Zuzanna Puc filled in admirably for Seda with 18 points and 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the year off the bench. Roeshonda Patterson joined her in double figures with 12 points off the pine while also grabbing a career-high five rebounds. Faith Cook added nine points and a pair of helpers while Katarina Zec also scored nine points. The Miners shot 49.2 percent (29-59) from the floor, including 41.2 percent (7-17) from 3-point range. UTEP was 12-16 on free throws, including Howell's perfect 9-9 night. FIU nailed an opponent season-high 13 triples and finished at 43.1 percent (25-58) from the floor.
 
CLOSE CALL TO START LEAGUE PLAY
For the first time since 1990-91 and the second occasion in program history, the Miners' conference opener was decided by one point. The difference is that this year UTEP came out on top (77-76 at FIU-1/5/18). In the 1991 WAC lid lifter the Miners fell, 67-66, at home to Hawaii on Jan. 7, 1991.
 
TALKING LEAGUE LIDLIFTERS
UTEP improved to 10-3 in Conference USA openers since joining the league (2005-06). The Miners have now won eight of the past nine in the situation. Overall the Miners now stand 15-22 all time in conference openers.
 
UTEP POSTS WIRE-TO-WIRE WIN AT UC RIVERSIDE (UTEP 73, at UC Riverside 62 (12/30/17)
Najala Howell poured in a career-high 23 points while Tamara Seda notched her second straight double-double (21 points, 14 rebounds) to help power UTEP to a wire-to-wire 73-62 win at UC Riverside on Dec. 30. The Miners bolted out to a 20-point lead at the half and led by 17 with six minutes to play before the Highlanders scored the next 12 points in the game to cut the margin down to five (67-62). UTEP kept its composure while regaining momentum for good on a triple by Howell to help fuel a game-closing 6-0 run. Faith Cook, who finished with seven points and six assists, set up both field goals down the stretch. UTEP connected on 43.9 percent (29-66) from the floor, aided by drilling 20-36 during the impressive opening half. The Miners dished out a season-high 20 assists while finishing with a season-low 14 turnovers for the second time in as many nights. Zuzanna Puc joined Howell and Seda in double figures for scoring with a campaign-high 15 points in 25 minutes of action off the pine.
 
UTEP OUTLASTS CAL STATE FULLERTON, 92-91, IN DOUBLE OVERTIME (UTEP 92, at Cal State Fullerton 91, 2OT, (12/29/17)
Tamara Seda posted a huge double-double (career-high 30 points, 12 rebounds) to help UTEP outlast homestanding Cal State Fullerton, 92-91, in double overtime Friday night. The game featured six ties and eight lead changes, with the final one coming after Zuzanna Puc banked home a runner in the lane to put the Miners up by one with 15 seconds left. The Titans, who had their three-game winning streak snapped, misfired on a baseline jumper as time expired. UTEP connected on 54.0 percent (34-63) of its shots, won the boards (35-33) and committed a season-low tying 14 turnovers. Katarina Zec poured in 21 points to buoy Seda while Najala Howell (16 points) and Puc (12 points) also reached double figures in scoring. Faith Cook tallied five points to go along with a team-high four assists.
 
SEDA JOINS 30-POINT GAME CLUB
Tamara Seda became just the second Miner in program history to score at least 30 points in a road game when she finished with 30 points (11-13 FG, 8-10 FT) in the 92-91 double overtime win at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 29. She joined former Miner great and WNBA player Kayla Thornton, who went off for 32 points at Memphis on Feb. 24, 2013. Overall it marked the 19th 30-point game at the school.
 
WHAT A WEEKEND
Tamara Seda turned in a simply dominant weekend of action in helping guide the Miners to two road wins in as many days at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 29 (92-91, 2OT) and at UC Riverside on Dec. 30 (73-62). She averaged 25.5 points and 13.0 rebounds while shooting a combined 84.0 percent (21-25) from the floor. It marked the first time of her career with back-to-back 20+ point contests, including a career-high 30-point outburst at CSUF.
 
HISTORIC POINT PRODUCTION ON THE ROAD
UTEP erupted for 92 points in the double overtime win at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 29. It marked just the second 90+ point effort in a road game in program history. The only other occasion the Miners achieved the feat came way back on Nov. 28, 1976, in a 107-37 win against a team from Fort Bliss.
 
HIGH SCORING AFFAIR
UTEP and Cal State Fullerton combined for 183 points in the double overtime thriller on Dec. 29. That marks the sixth-most combined points in a game in program history.
 
BIG-TIME FIRST HALF
UTEP set season highs for first quarter (24), second quarter (24) and first half (48) scoring outputs in the eventual 92-91 double overtime win at Cal State Fullerton on Dec. 29.
 
UTEP FALLS AT TULANE, 67-56, IN TITLE TILT OF 22ND-ANNUAL TULANE CLASSIC (at Tulane 67, UTEP 56, 12/22/17)
The UTEP women's basketball team was knocked off by host Tulane, 67-56, in the championship contest of the 22nd-annual Tulane Classic inside historic Fogelman Arena on Dec. 22. The Miners trailed by just three (21-18) after the first quarter but the Green Wave opened up the second frame on an 11-0 run to grab control of the contest. UTEP continued to battle as the game wore on but could never get closer than nine points the rest of the way. Katarina Zec tallied 14 points to pace the Orange and Blue, who finished at 36.2 percent (21-58) from the floor. UTEP won the rebounding battle (43-38) for the 11th time in as many contests but it wasn't enough to offset the 40 percent (27-68) shooting by the Green Wave. Tulane was paced by 22 points by Kolby Morgan, but needed 23 field goal attempts to do so. Jordan Jenkins added a career-high seven points while Zuzanna Puc (nine points), Roeshonda Patterson (eight points), Tamara Seda (six points, eight rebounds) also contributed for the Orange and Blue. 
 
UTEP STIFLES SAMFORD, 46-33  (UTEP 46, vs. Samford 33, 12/21/17)
UTEP turned in its best defensive effort of the year in an impressive 46-33 victory against Samford in its opening game of the 22nd-annual Tulane Classic inside historic Fogelman Arena on Dec. 21. The Miners advance to challenge host Tulane in the championship contest of the classic at 2 p.m. MST/3 p.m. CST Friday while the Bulldogs will play Troy in the consolation tilt after having their three-game winning streak snapped. UTEP set season bests for fewest points allowed (33) and defensive field-goal percentage (20.8 percent). That defensive field-goal percentage ranks as the sixth best in program history. The Miners never trailed in the contest, and at one point led by as many as 26 (44-18), which is their biggest advantage of the campaign. UTEP was up 19-9 at the break. It marked the first time that the Miners held an opponent to fewer than 10 points in a half since keeping NM State to eight on Nov. 29, 2011. The Orange and Blue ended any aspirations of a comeback by Samford after they started the second half on a 10-0 run. Najala Howell tallied 12 points to go along with eight rebounds to lead the way for the Miners. Roeshonda Patterson (eight points, career-high four rebounds), Zuzanna Puc (eight points, four rebounds), Tamara Seda (seven points, eight boards) and Jordan Alexander (seven points, seven rebounds, four charges) also got after it for the Orange and Blue. The Miners finished at 34.0 percent (16-47) from the floor, aided by a sizzling 61.5 percent (8-13) during the third quarter. UTEP also won the rebounding battle (49-30) for the 10th time in as many tilts this season.
 
STRANGE WIN
UTEP secured a win when scoring 50 points or less in the game for the first time since doing so twice in the 2012-13 season. Additionally it marked the second-largest margin of victory (13 points) in a contest when the Miners were held to 50 points or less. Overall the Miners are now 16-156 in contests when tallying 50 points or less.
 
UTEP SHOOTS PAST EAST CAROLINA, 93-79, IN OVERTIME (UTEP 93, East Carolina 79, (OT) 12/17/17)
Six different players reached double figures in scoring and UTEP connected on a school-record 42 free throws to power past former Conference USA foe East Carolina, 93-79, in overtime in a neutral site contest as part of the Carolinas Challenge on Dec. 17. The Pirates buried a triple to take a 78-75 lead 21 seconds into OT but the Miners finished the contest on an incredible 18-1 run to halt ECU's five-game winning streak. UTEP went 13-14 from the charity stripe in the OT period to cap a record-setting day at the free-throw line. Overall the Miners nailed a program-best 42 free throws on 50 attempts (third most at school). UTEP also shot 50 percent (23-46) from the floor and won the boards (40-33), which helped compensate for 23 turnovers. Faith Cook poured in a career-high 16 points to share the team lead in scoring with Tamara Seda. Najala Howell proved big with her second-career double-double (15 points, 11 rebounds) while junior Jordan Alexander tallied a career-high tying 15 points to go along with eight boards. Zuzanna Puc pitched in a season-high 16 points off the pine and Katarina Zec overcame early foul trouble to also hit double figures in scoring (11 points). Howell was a perfect 10-10 at the charity stripe while Cook (8-10), Alexander (7-10), Seda (6-6), Zec (6-6) and Puc (4-5) also took care of business at the line.
 
UTEP UPENDED AT NM STATE, 76-68 (at NM State 76, UTEP 68, 12/10/17)
Katarina Zec poured in a career-high 22 points while matching the program record for 3-pointers with seven but homestanding NM State downed UTEP, 76-68, inside the Pan-American Center on Dec. 10. The Miners led by one (34-33) at the half before the Aggies used a huge third quarter (25-13) to surge into the lead. The margin swelled to as many as 15 (67-52) before UTEP eventually struck back with a 7-0 run to cut it to seven (69-62) but it was too little too late. Both squads shot well from the floor (UTEP 44.8 percent, NM State 45.3 percent) while also nailing 12 three pointers each, but NM State converted 21 UTEP turnovers into 23 points to create some separation. Conversely NM State's 11 giveaways led to seven UTEP points. The Miners tried to make up for it by winning the boards (40-31) for the eighth time in as many games, which resulted in a 12-4 cushion in second chance points, but it wasn't enough. Tamara Seda joined Zec in double figures with 12 points while junior Jordan Alexander flirted with a double-double (eight points, career-high 11 rebounds). Najala Howell and Roeshonda Patterson each finished with nine in the game.
 
UTEP EDGED AT ARKANSAS STATE, 76-73 (at Arkansas State 76, UTEP 73 (12/5/17)
Tamara Seda (19 points, 16 rebounds), Najala Howell (17 points) and Roeshonda Patterson (career-high 17 points) all reached double figures in scoring but UTEP was edged at Arkansas State, 76-73, on Dec. 5. The Red Wolves set opponent season highs for points (76) and field-goal percentage (49.2) to help them rally past the Miners. UTEP was up 44-36 at the half but A-State used a huge third quarter (24-11) to surge into the lead and the Miners could never recover. They went down fighting, though, whittling a nine-point deficit (72-63) down to three on a pair of occasions but couldn't quite complete the comeback. The Orange and Blue connected on 42.9 percent (27-63) from the floor while also winning the boards (43-27) but couldn't get enough stops to pull off the win. UTEP's 73 points establish a season high.  Seda has now recorded five straight double-doubles, the longest such streak by a Miner in non-conference play since at least 1982-83 (prior records incomplete). 
 
UTEP SINKS HBU, 69-62 (at UTEP 69, HBU 62 (12/2/17)
Senior Tamara Seda recorded her fourth straight double-double (18 points, 16 rebounds) while junior Najala Howell poured in a season-high tying 19 points to help lead UTEP to a 69-62 victory against HBU at the Don Haskins Center on Dec. 2. The Huskies led 31-26 at the half but the Miners came alive after the break to post the come-from-behind win to close out the season-opening six-game homestand in style. The game featured eight ties and seven lead changes, with the final one coming down the stretch when UTEP peeled off nine straight points-all on treys- to turn a one-point deficit (57-56) into their largest lead of the contest (65-57). HBU scored the next five points but the Miners put the game out of reach with a Jordan Alexander jumper with 21 seconds to play. UTEP set season highs for 3-pointers made (10), attempted (21) and percentage (47.6), including going 6-8 from distance in the final frame to help complete the comeback. The Miners also won the boards (44-32) while holding HBU to 38.1 percent (24-63) from the floor, including 19.0 percent (4-21) from distance. Sophomore Roeshonda Patterson provided a spark off the bench with a career-high matching 11 points to join Howell and Seda in double figures. Freshman Jordan Jenkins pitched in a personal-best six points to go along with six assists.
 
UTEP SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF SEASON VS. (RV) NEW MEXICO (New Mexico 59, at UTEP 35 (11/30/17)
UTEP held New Mexico to 59 points-30 below its average- but couldn't get enough shots to fall in a 59-35 setback at the Don Haskins Center on Nov. 30. The undefeated Lobos, who are receiving votes for both top-25 polls, were limited to 39.7 percent (23-58) from the floor and 33.0 percent (12-36) from distance but they overcame through a physical defensive effort that gave the Miners fits. UTEP shot 25.0 percent (11-44) in the game while being harassed into 25 turnovers that led to 22 UNM points. The Miners won the battle of the boards, 44-31, but it wasn't enough to compensate for the off shooting night. Senior Tamara Seda recorded her third straight double-double (11 points, 13 rebounds) to pace UTEP while sophomore Katarina Zec added nine points. Sophomore Zuzanna Puc came off the bench to contribute five points and a season-high eight rebounds. Sophomore Roeshonda Patterson also pitched in five points and sophomore Faith Cook registered a career-high seven boards.
 
UTEP GRINDS OUT 65-55 WIN VS. TEXAS SOUTHERN (at UTEP 65, Texas Southern 55 (11/25/17)
Junior Najala Howell (16 points, 10 rebounds) and senior Tamara Seda (13 points, 13 rebounds) each posted double-doubles to help UTEP notch a hard-fought 65-55 win against Texas Southern in the final game of the sixth-annual UTEP Thanksgiving Classic at the Don Haskins Center on Nov. 25. The Miners never trailed in the contest and used a 10-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to break the game's one and only tie (48-48, 5:20 4Q) in decisive fashion. UTEP held the Lady Tigers, who have averaged 20 wins the past five years, to 38.8 percent shooting (19-49) while also crushing them on the boards (46-25). Playing a big role in the rebounding margin was a season-high 21 offensive rebounds which led to 21 second-chance points for the home side.  The Miners connected on 34.0 percent (18-53) of their shots but they more than made up for that with their rebounding and defensive efforts, in addition to setting season bests for free-throws made (26), attempted (33) and percentage (.788). In fact the Orange and Blue were 16-17 at the charity stripe in the pressure-packed fourth quarter. Sophomore Katarina Zec chipped in 10 points, her third straight game in double figures, while also grabbing a career-high eight rebounds. Junior Jordan Alexander registered 13 points and six caroms while sophomore Roeshonda Patterson provided a spark off the best with a season-high seven points and career-high matching three rebounds.
 
UTEP TAKES DOWN SEC FOE ARKANSAS, 64-61 (at UTEP 64, Arkansas 61 (11/24/17)
UTEP posted a wire-to-wire 64-61 victory against Southeastern Conference foe Arkansas in its opening game of the sixth-annual UTEP Thanksgiving Classic at the Don Haskins Center on Nov. 24. The Miners raced out to a 13-2 lead four minutes in, were up 18 (38-20) at half and 16 (52-36) through three quarters before withstanding a furious rally attempt by the Razorbacks. UA managed to whittle UTEP's advantage all the way down to one (62-61) but sophomore Faith Cook hit a fade away jumper to beat the shot clock with eight seconds left in the game to put the Miners back up by three. The visitor's Devin Cosper then misfired on a triple at the other end. Tamara Seda notched a double-double (career-high tying 20 points, 10 rebounds) to lead UTEP, but she was buoyed by 14 points and eight rebounds from Najala Howell and 10 points and six boards by Katarina Zec. Jordan Jenkins did her part with a career-high seven assists while Zuzanna Puc pitched in eight points and four boards in 15 minutes off the bench in her 2017-18 debut. UTEP connected on better than 50.0 percent (50.8 percent, 27-53) from the floor for the third straight game, something it hasn't done to start a season since at least 1981-82 (prior stats incomplete). The Miners also defended tirelessly, holding Arkansas to 30.0 percent (21-70) from the floor. The Razorbacks jacked up 41 3-point shots, but only made 11, for a readout of 26.8 percent. The Orange and Blue took care of business on the boards, winning the rebounding battle to the tune of 51-27. Helping that figure was 40 defensive boards, the most against a division I opponent since also securing 40 against Tulane on March 8, 2013. An area of concern for UTEP was turnovers (23) which led to 22 Arkansas points. But the Orange and Blue compensated for that by the dominance in other areas, in addition to holding a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint.
 
TAKING DOWN A POWER PROGRAM
UTEP downed Arkansas, 64-61, on Nov. 24 to secure its first win in program history against an SEC opponent. Overall it is UTEP's initial regular-season victory against a power-five conference foe since it crushed Kansas State, 84-39, on Nov. 16, 2013. The Miners are now 11-53 all time vs. teams from a power five conference (at point of match-up), but they are 7-10 since 2012-13.
 
UTEP CRUISES PAST TEXAS A&M-CORPUS CHRISTI, 69-49 (at UTEP 69, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 49 (11/18/17)
UTEP played well in all facets off the game in a convincing 69-49 victory against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at the Don Haskins Center on Nov. 18. The Miners shot 54.3 percent (25-46) from the floor while stifling the Islanders to a readout of 31.1 percent (19-61), including 4-15 (26.7 percent) from distance. UTEP won the boards (38-30), racked up 19 assists compared to 14 turnovers and led for the majority of the contest. Najala Howell paced the Orange and Blue with 19 points-one shy of a personal best- while also dishing out a career-high seven assists. Katarina Zec (12 points), Tamara Seda (11 points) and Jakeira Ford (10 points) all joined her in double figures for scoring while Jordan Alexander pitched in seven points.  Four different Miners grabbed at least five rebounds, with Ford leading the way with six caroms.  UTEP led by two (14-12) after the first quarter before outscoring the visitors 35-16 over the next two frames to blow open the game.
 
UTEP RALLIES PAST CSU BAKERSFIELD IN OPENER, 67-56 (at UTEP 67, CSU Bakersfield 56 (11/11/17)
UTEP used a huge fourth quarter to rally past CSU Bakersfield, 67-56, in the 2017-18 season opener for both squads at the Don Haskins Center on Nov. 11. The Roadrunners led by eight (45-37) through three quarters of action but the Miners opened up the final frame on an 13-1 run to help fuel a dominant 30-11 advantage over the last 10 minutes of action. Senior Tamara Seda (20 points), junior Jordan Alexander (15 points) and sophomore Faith Cook (14 points) each established career highs to lead the way for the Miners, who were victorious in head coach Kevin Baker's Division I coaching debut. Junior Najala Howell (10 points) also reached double digits in scoring for UTEP, which nailed 51.2 percent (21-41) from the floor and 42.9 percent (6-14) from beyond-the-arc. Alexander, who played her freshman year at DI Louisiana before transferring to Trinity Valley, grabbed a personal-best 10 boards for her first career double-double while Seda added eight caroms. UTEP won the rebounding battle, 36-30, which was aided by a whopping 16-2 advantage in the fourth quarter. The Miners held CSUB to 32.8 percent (20-61) from the floor.
 
SAVE THE BEST FOR LAST
After scoring 37 points through three quarters of action, the Miners erupted for 30 points over the final 10 minutes to erase an eight-point deficit and rally past CSU Bakersfield on Nov. 11. The 30 points are the most scored in the fourth quarter by the Miners in program history and rank tied for fifth-most points in a quarter overall at the school.
 
START IT OFF STRONG
UTEP improved to 24-20 all time in season openers, including 21-7 when doing so in El Paso. Overall in home openers, the Miners now stand 28-14 (missing outcomes in some years).
 
RECAPPING THE EXHIBITION SEASON
For the first time since the 2007-08 season, the Miners played a pair of exhibition games to prepare for the regular season. UTEP split the contests, drilling NCAA Division III member Sul Ross State, 99-40, on Oct. 29, while falling to NCAA Division II member St. Mary's (Texas), 68-62, on Nov. 4. Katarina Zec (17.5 points per game) was the top point producer for the Miners but four others (Tamara Seda-16.5 ppg, Najala Howell-15.0 ppg, Jordan Alexander-11.0 ppg and Jakeira Ford-11.0 ppg) also averaged double figures in scoring. As a team UTEP shot 45.5 percent (56-123) from the floor while holding its foes to 30.9 percent (38-123). The Miners excelled at the free-throw line (35-42, 83.3 percent) and also dominated the rebounding department (51.0 rebounds per game to 27.5 opponent rebounds per game).
