Erandi Martinez Reaches Twenty Singles WIns on Season, UTSA Gets By UTEP 4-1

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – With a straight-set victory over her UTSA opponent, UTEP tennis freshman Erandi Martinez reached 20 singles wins on the year, but the Miners, showing a lot of fight, were edged by the Roadrunners 4-1 in a Conference USA match on Friday at the UTSA Tennis Center.

Martinez took down Ivana Ilic 6-1, 6-1 on court no. 3 to move to 20-10 on the season and 10-5 in dual match play.

"Erandi played another great match, I am very proud of her," head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We came out with a lot of energy in doubles and had chances early on at number two, and number one was winning. The singles were extremely close. We had chances to win first sets on Raven [Bennett] and Milena's [Baigorria] courts. If we had managed that, it would have made a huge difference. We played with a lot of heart and did the best we could.

UTEP was again shorthanded due to injuries and was forced to forfeit at the no. 3 doubles and no. 6 singles position. However, the Miners did not go down easy, as Raven Bennett and Lois Wagenvoort were leading 4-3 over Denisa Ibrahimovic and Kylee Kato at no. 1 doubles. The Miners' top tandem's match was left unfinished, as the Roadrunners' Laura Cabrera and Sonia Madronal clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Milena Baigorria and Maria Paula Medina at the no. 2 spot.

In singles action, Martinez's quick win kept the score close at 2-1 in the Roadrunners' favor but the Miners fighting. Lois Wagenvoort, playing the no. 1 position, was taking on UTSA's Ibrahimovic and kept pace, but fell 6-3, 6-1. Bennett kept her fight at the no. 2 spot against Cabrera, notching five points in set one before being edged 7-5, 6-1, sealing the match for the Roadrunners. Baigorria kept it close in set one against Kato on court no. 5, but fell 7-5 in the stanza before her match was left unfinished. Medina battled at the no. 4 spot against Charleen Tiwari, but dropped set one 6-4 before the match was called.

The Miners will return to action Saturday when they meet another league foe in LA Tech at the UTSA Tennis Center. First serve against the Lady Techsters tomorrow is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
