IAAF Diamond League: Korir Wins First Race of the 2018 Season

DOHA, Qatar – Former UTEP track and field NCAA Champion Emmanuel Korir garnered his first 800m win of the season at the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) Diamond League in Doha, Qatar on Friday.

Kenya swept the 800m with Korir leading the pack by crossing the finish line to take gold with a time of 1:45.21. His time beat that of American Olympic bronze medalist Clayton Murphy (1:47.22) and World Indoor champ Adam Kszczot (Poland, 1:46.70) and 1,500m world champ Elijah Manangoi (Kenya, 1:45.60).

Current Miner and sophomore Michael Saruni still holds the No.1 time in the world this year with a clocking of 1:43.25, setting the NCAA record at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Ariz.

The IAAF Diamond League is an annual series of elite track and field competitions, held throughout Europe, Asia, North America and Africa. The top-eight athletes at each meet are awarded points (8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1) that determine which athletes qualify for the discipline finals in Zurich, Switzerland, and Brussels, Belgium.

Athletes who win at the finals are declared IAAF Diamond League Champions.

This is the second Diamond League win under Korir's belt, after he claimed the 800m in Fontvieille, Monaco, in 2017.

The next Diamond League event will be held in Shanghai, China, on May 12.
