EL PASO, Texas – Following three straight weekends of road action, the UTEP tennis team returns home this weekend for a pair of matches. The Miners (3-7) will play host to Montana State (2-7) at 1 p.m. MT Saturday, in addition to squaring off against Wyoming (5-2) at 10 a.m. MT Sunday.
"After three weekends on the road we are very excited to be back home at the El Paso Tennis Club," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We have been playing better and better with each match so far, and we look to continue to build on that this weekend."
Most recently the Orange and Blue split a pair of matches in Las Vegas, Nev., rallying to defeat Youngstown State, 4-3, on Feb. 21 before being clipped, 4-0, at UNLV on Feb. 23. Including the matches on Saturday and Sunday, UTEP has only four home contests remaining on the ledger. The Miners are 1-2 in the Sun City in 2020, but they are looking to improve upon that mark this weekend.
Junior
Erandi Martinez tops the team in dual-match wins (5-4), including a 3-1 mark at No. 3 singles. Lina Sáchica and
Vanessa Valdez are tied for second on the unit with a quartet of victories in 2020, while
Kathleen Percegona and
Eve Daniels each boast three triumphs.
Daniels and Sáchica have teamed up to produce a solid 4-4 mark in dual play, which is aided by a 2-1 record at No. 2 doubles. The pairing also has two wins at the No. 3 position.
Maria Aveiga and Percegona have held down the fort at No. 1 doubles.
Both matches will be contested at the El Paso Tennis Club, and admission is free.
