SAN MARCOS, Texas – Freshman Thássane Abrahim posted a 6-4, 6-4, win against Chacadyah Lewis at No. 5 singles to highlight the action for UTEP in its 6-1 defeat at Texas State on Friday. The freshman moved to 3-3 at the No. 5 position in dual action this spring.
"It was one of those days that we had a lot of chances but couldn't take advantage of them," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "We are still learning how to compete at this level, and I know we have better days ahead of us."
Vanessa Valdez and Lina Sáchica battled but fell, 6-4, to Sofia Murcia-Rodriguez and Josefina Cassara at No. 2 doubles. UTEP's tandem of
Kathleen Percegona and
Maria Aveiga was knocked off, 6-2, by Hana Kvapilova and Rishona Lewis at the No. 1 position. Abrahim and
Eve Daniels were leading Chacadyah Lewis and Andrea Fuchs, 5-4, at No. 3 doubles when the match was stopped due to the doubles point having been decided.
Abrahim did her part to try to spark a UTEP rally in singles, posting the win in straight sets over Chacadyah Lewis. TSU took care of business on the other courts, though, to secure the victory. Lewis upended Valdez, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
Erandi Martinez went down to Kvapilova, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 2 singles.
Percegona fought hard only to sustain a 6-4, 6-4, setback at No. 4 singles. Sáchica was tripped up by Cassara, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.
Elena Dibattista split her first two sets (6-3, 5-7) with Gonzalez before her foe staked the match in a super tiebreaker.
UTEP will look to get back on track when it squares off at Conference USA foe UTSA at 9 a.m. MT/10 a.m. CT Sunday.
