UTEP WBB Set to Host North Dakota on Saturday at 1 p.m.

EL PASO – The UTEP women's basketball team (1-0), coming off its 34-point season-opening win, will host North Dakota (0-1) on Saturday with tip set for 1 p.m. in the Haskins Center.

The Miners are coming off an 81-47 dominating victory over Incarnate Word on Thursday night.

Teal Battle scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in her UTEP debut, while Destiny Thurman also tallied 16 and dished out four assists to lead the Miners. Katia Gallegos added 12 points and a team-high five dimes, and Eliana Cabral, in her Division I debut, was the fourth Miner in double figures (10 points).

The Miners forced 25 turnovers and snagged 11 steals. UTEP outrebounded the Cardinals, 38-29. UTEP also tallied 17 assists to only 13 turnovers.

"We'll have to play better than we did [last night], no question," fifth-year UTEP Head Coach Kevin Baker said. "When people look at the scoreboard, they say, 'you played really well', but I think this team can play better, I think we can play at a higher level, and hopefully we will on Saturday."

UTEP shot 47.6 percent from the floor, including 7-of-18 from downtown against the Cardinals.

The Fighting Hawks fell in their season opener, 72-57, against Weber State. Claire Orth scored a team-high 15 points, while DJ Davis made her Division I debut with 10 points.

The four-game home stand will continue in a Battle of I-10 against NM State on Wednesday, Nov. 17 with tip set for 7 p.m., and Northern Arizona on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 7 p.m.
