Late Push Comes Up Short as Miners Fall 1-0 to North Texas

EL PASO, Texas – North Texas withstood a late scare from UTEP to hold on for a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon at University Field.

Needing a goal to even the score and keep their chances at a spot in the Conference USA Championship alive, the Miners (4-10-3, 1-6-2 C-USA) created a quality look in the final minute.

With 45 seconds left, Vanessa Cabello launched a pass forward from her defender position. Tori Paul received the ball and took the possession towards keeper Dani Jacobson, who would have it bounce off of her.

In the perfect spot to receive the carom from just outside the box, Tessa Carlin chipped a shot towards what at the time was an empty net. Seeing the dangerous situation unfold, North Texas (10-5-2, 6-2-1 C-USA) defender Victoria Altieri would jump in front of the net and head the on-frame shot away to preserve the win for the visitors.

Devyn Flannery scored the lone goal of the contest in the sixth minute for the Mean Green. Her goal was assisted by Taylor Tufts and Madi Starrett. It was Starrett who set the look up with a quality pass from around midfield. Following another pass from Tufts, Flannery buried the shot into the lower-left corner to make it 1-0 North Texas.

The Miners were outshot 16-4 in the match and 8-3 in shots on goal. Early on, UTEP generated a pair of shots in the first three minutes to apply pressure.

Mariah Scott made seven saves for the Miners while Carlin and Eve Barry each led the way with a pair of shots.

Combined with the UTEP loss, Charlotte was the final team to clinch a spot in the C-USA Championship following a scoreless draw against FIU earlier today.

Sunday wrapped up the home slate for the Miners this season, with UTEP set to conclude the campaign next Friday at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT at UTSA.
