Hermannsdottir Hat Trick Leads Florida Atlantic Over Miners


BOCA RATON, Fla. – Behind a Thelma Hermannsdottir hat trick, Florida Atlantic topped UTEP 6-0 on Friday night.
 
Hermannsdottir netted her trio of goals in the 14th, 53rd and 87th minutes to lead the Owls (7-5-3, 3-2-1 C-USA) to victory.
 
The first goal for the native of Iceland came off a pass that was headed over by Mia Sennes that she would give a right-footed finish to into the upper-left corner to give FAU a 1-0 lead.
 
Hailey Landrus added the other first-half goal in the 38th minute directly off the corner.
 
Leading 2-0 entering the final 45 minutes, the Owls would net four more as part of a strong finish.
 
Hermannsdottir started the second-half scoring in the 53rd minute.
 
FAU then posted three more goals over the final 15 minutes by Elin Simonardottir, Hermannsdottir and Sennes.  
 
The Owls put together an impressive effort to possess the ball over 60 percent of the game, including 69 percent of the touches for FAU coming in the attacking half. Winning the possession battle led to 22 shots on the night, including 12 on frame.
 
Goalkeeper Alaina Gilbert made her collegiate debut late in the game for the Miners (3-8-3, 0-4-2 C-USA).
 
UTEP will travel to Rice next Thursday for a 6 p.m. MT start.
