ABILENE, Texas – The UTEP tennis team (2-6) was upended at Abilene Christian (5-6) on Monday afternoon. The Miners were shooting for their second road win in as many days, but it wasn't in the cards.
 
"It was a tough day vs. ACU," UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez said. "We didn't take advantage in the doubles and let the point slip away. We had to play singles without Vero (Veronika Lebisova) due to an injury, but the rest of the team stepped in and fought as hard as they could. I know we learned a lot from this match, and it should help us for the rest of the spring."
 
UTEP was competitive in doubles, but couldn't find a way to pull out the win. Thassane Abrahim and Veronika Lebisova were clipped by Claire Fisher and Ileana Mocciola, 6-3, while Kathleen Percegona and Carlotta Mencaglia were edged, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles by Sylvia Viljoen and Allison Stewart. Eve Daniels and Lina Sachica fell 6-1 to Maryjoe Crisologo and Andrea Guerrero at No. 3 doubles.
 
The Miners hoped to rally in singles play, but they couldn't complete a comeback. Mencaglia went down in three sets to Viljoen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles. Daniels was tripped up by Fisher, 6-7, 6-1, 10-3, at No. 5 singles. Percegona put up a great fight in a 7-5, 7-6 setback at No. 1 singles to Crisologo.
 
Sachica was bested by Guerrero, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, while Elena Dibattista was knocked off by Stewart, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Abrahim went down to Mocciola by a final count of 7-5, 6-1, at No. 6 singles.
 
UTEP will vie to get back in the win column when it plays at New Mexico at 12 p.m. MT Saturday.
