UTEP T&F Completes NM Collegiate Classic

2/5/2022 5:06:00 PM

EL PASO – UTEP track and field's Oghenekaro Brume, Jalen Cadet, Kevin Hewitt, Rodgers Korir, Jevaughn Powell and Karen Villa all competed at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in the Albuquerque Convention Center on Friday and Saturday.

With just over a handful of student-athletes competing in Albuquerque this weekend, the meet was utilized for Miners who had not competed yet or sparingly this season, while a pair of freshmen participated in their first multi-events of the campaign.

"Our freshman Jalen and Karen competed hard in their first multi-event competitions," UTEP Head Coach Mika Laaksonen said. "It was a wild outing, but both hit a few good events and gained valuable experience for the conference. The other four student-athletes, who have been injured or sick, opened up their indoor seasons and as expected performances were not at the level we hoped for yet."

Cadet, who has already seen action this season, competed in his first collegiate heptathlon. Cadet got off to a solid start in the men's heptathlon, darting out to a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.02 (875 points), and followed that with a 6.95-meter (22-9.75) mark in the long jump which was good for second (802). Cadet also competing in the shot put (609) and high jump (585), finishing day one (Friday) in third place with 2,871 points. Cadet finished with 4,356 points after coming up short in the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1000-meter run on Saturday afternoon.

Villa competed in the women's pentathlon which consisted of the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and 800-meter run. She finished with 3,060 points.

Powell (200m), Korir (3000m) and Hewitt (600m) made their season debuts on the men's side, while Brume (200m), who missed last weekend's MLK Jr. Invite, traveled to her second meet of the season.
