UTEP’s Victor Kibiego Wins Arturo Barrios with Dominant Performance

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Victor Kibiego set a course record and personal best with a 22:54.8 and a championship at the Arturo Barrios Invitational hosted by Texas A&M at Dale Watts Cross Country Course in College Station on Friday morning.

Kibiego killed the competition on Friday the 13^th, placing first out of 365 competitors in the men's 8k event. Teammate Titus Cheruiyot turned in a fourth-place finish, clocking in a personal-best 23:11.0.

Kenneth Talavera (69 points), Juan Olmos (166), Alejandro Tarin (177), Maxwell Kipkosgei (209) and Angel Torres (254) rounded out the order of finish for the men's squad.

The men's squad finished 15^th with 417 points out of 39 programs. Tulane won the men's team title with 103 points.

"[Victor] put stellar performance," UTEP associate head cross country coach Mircea Bogdan said. "He dominated from 6k onward, took the race by the horns and no one had an answer for it. And Titus [Cheruiyot] was also very sharp and bold. Great performance for him too. I thought as a group [the women's team] did pretty well, everyone improved from the last meet, but there is much more to go after. And we won't settle quite yet."

Ruth Jerubet was the top Miner on the women's side, placing 87^th out of 385 competitors. She clocked in a 21:01.4. Rounding the order of finished for the women were Vallary Kiplagat (157 points), Brenda Jerop (174), Joan Kimaiyo (203), Victoria Ovalles (231), Salma Licon (251), Elise Wilcher (258), Alexa Rangel and Pamela Ramirez Elizalde rounded out the order of finish for the Miners.

The women's team placed 28^th with 862 points out of 41 programs. Utah Valley won the team event (97 points), while Texas Tech's Juliet Cherubet won the women's individual title (19:20.70.
